I believe you may have to, unless its been designed to 'slide' out the side.
Most cases will hold the two ends of the shaft, so maybe Yesy to splitting.
Good luck with it. Love to hear how it came out.
Cheers n Happy Trails...

SOURCE: shift shaft replace

Yes. Sad but true. On most late model Honda four stroke singles, the shift shaft turns the shift drum directly, from within the engine cases.

SOURCE: I have a 1984 honda xr 350 and i've changed the

Those bikes can be a pain to start after they've sat awhile. What always worked for me was twist the throttle a bunch. I mean make sure its flooded. Then lay the bike over on its left side until the gas runs out the overflow. Stand it up and lay it down until it stops running out. Then I squeeze the decompression lever and cycle the motor. Now just barely pull on the decompression lever to open the valve just barely. Get it to top dead center and give her a good kick with a twist of the throttle. Becareful it could kick back.
This technique works for when the bike stalls when its hot. Most important part is if you think its flooded lay it over and start the process over. Remember your XR has two carbs and will flood QUICK. After some practice you'll be able to hear it in the exhaust pipe if she's flooded or if she trying to come around. Trust me. I have four of these bikes. Two 83's, one 84 and my beloved 85.

SOURCE: I have a 85 Honda xr 200. I was changing the oil

Hello Peter. You are correct in stating that your actions caused the shifter lever problem. You will have to remove the case in order to reconnect the shifter lever. This is a difficult job so unless you are mechanically inclined, it would be best to leave this repair to the pros. Joe

Found this bike rotting and I'm fixing it up. Can anyone please help me identify the model? First I thought it was the XR250 but the engine block looks a little small for a 250cc. Electric start.

The Honda XR 200R had a 195 cc (11.9 cu in) engine that was shared with the Honda ATC 200x but with a different camshaft and carburetor. This engine ran 10:1 compression ratio and was over square. For the 1984-85 model years, the XR200 had a smaller version of the same 4 valve RFVC engine as the other XR's in the line up. The 200cc RFVC engine shared many parts with the 250cc RFVC engine. For the 1986 model year, Honda reverted to the 2 valve engine that had powered the XR200R before 1984 and variations of the 2 valve engine continued to power the XR200R until the model was dropped altogether.

Cdi

Do not use a universal CDI unless you have the exact wiring cross-over diagram, or have tech help from the manufacturer. You can short out the CDI and other ignition components like the stator.

Does it matter which side is down, or should one side be down when splitting the case on a 2002 Gas Gas EC 300? My shifter shaft has broken (spins freely) and I need to split my case to investigate; I...

Hi, you will normaly find that the crankshaft will remove easyer from the r/h mainbearing, thus it will be less difficult to split the cases if you leave everything in the left case, if it is the crankshaft is more loosly fitted in the left case then do it the other way around, gently tapping the shaft ends with a copper or wooden hammer should see them out ok

My 2001 KTM 250sx is stuck in gear, the shifter moves up and down but does not change the gears. I removed the clutch everything is pefect, gonna pull the basket. Any ideas? I have seen other saying bent...

It sounds like the end of the shifting shaft has broke loose, it is a welded joint, If you can grab the shifter with your hand and feel that thing slip in there, up and down, that might be the problem, but splitting that case, ugh, total rebuild.Too bad you can't get to it through the clutch. Hope this helps.moz-screenshot-1.png

Pulled the pin bolt instead of drain plug

Sorry. I'm very certain you can't fix your problem without splitting the case. I would be cautious about running the motor at all. When you removed that bolt those pieces are free to fall down to the bottom of the case to interfere and do damage. Good Luck.

1984 CJ7 stuck in reverse. Staight 6, 5 speed and will not shift out of reverse.

you have a bent shift fork or shaft, you will need to remove the dust boot pull the shift snap ring it the shifter is in the floor and pull the shifter stick off then remove the transmisson top cover and replace the reverse first shift fork, this is the most common cause, if it has a columm shifter then disconnet the shifter lever and try shifting if it shifts then you have bent linkage and will need to figure out where it is located.

Shifter noise on my 1985 sportster

The Sportster has a "cassette" type transmission. The transmission can be removed without the necessity of splitting the cases to get at it like most other motorcycles.

To remove the transmission one must remove the primary drive component that include the compensator sprocket, the primary chain, and the clutch assembly on the left side of the engine. On the right side of the engine, you'll have to remove the rear brake master cylinder, the front chain sprocket cover, and the front chain sprocket.

Going back to the left side of the engine and remove the four bolts that hold the transmission front plate (access cover) to the engine cases. There are two "pry points" on the access cover. Look around the edge of the cover and you will see them. Pry the access cover off gently and the transmission will come out of the engine cases. The shifter shaft will remain in the cases. When you reinstall the transmission, mark the shaft in such a manner that you can tell what position the shifter shaft finger is pointing. It should be level pointing to the rear of the engine as the transmission is reinstalled in the case.

If you can find a Clymer's manual #M428, it explains in detail the removal and repair of the transmission.
