Backfire through carb is timing too far advanced.
Backfire through exhaust is timing too retarded.

SOURCE: Backfiring when idling back down thru the gears

that seems to be what they do, i too have a 650a and have jardines on with baffles, it still pops and cackles when you roll off the gas. are you running no baffels? when i took mine out i noticed a drop in power as i had removed the requierd back pressure for optimum performance. you can get small baffles to slip into straight pipes from jc whitney for about $5 each.
anyway back to the backfire. my local bike shop shrugged their sholders when i asked them about mine saying it's what they do. you will get used to it and you will find a way to kinda not make it do it so much. i actually have grown to like it now, except when there are cops about.

happy safe riding

SOURCE: 1981 Wide Glide Bike is missing and backfiring

open up the ignition cover plate and check the backing plate. it may have come loose and threw the bike out of time.
make sure your plug wires are plugged on tight and the coil wires are secure.
It is most definitely a timing problem.

SOURCE: backfiring on deceleration from exhaust pipes

May be running too lean or too rich. Check the color of your plugs, black dry and sooty means they are rich, white with blisters lean.

How do i fix my ford 302 motor ranchero that backfires

I believe that in that era of autos they were required to have an air injection pump to the exhaust manifolds and upon deceleration the air dump valve if malfunctioning would cause tremendous backfire that scared the s*** out of all near the thing. Replace air dump valve. Maybe that's not the condition it's backfire is happening but it's a stab at it.

Backfiring thru exhaust

Valve Lash is incorrect, can also be caused by injector fallout ( injector over heated and continues to dump fuel long past its cut off point ).

Craftsman mower backfires out the exhaust when starting warm motor

Sounds like it is letting unburned fuel thru the carberator and getting ignited by the hot exhaust. Your carb is out of adjustment or could be worn out.

Briggs & stratton mod. 406777-0115-E1 engine backfires thru exhaust

This is a true tale sign of a valve being out of adjustment or possible burnt or sticking. Most likely its just out of adjustment. Setting them to Book Specifications of: Valve Clearance (cold) IN and EX .005" (0.13 mm) should take care of the problem. Since you said that it runs fine rules out the possibility of a sheared flywheel key, though I have seen one run with it slightly sheared. Thanks; George

What causes backfire from the carborator

  • Some carburetors can induce backfire due to the sensitivity of internal transitional passages. This condition cannot be corrected. Also the carburetor adjustments could be set too lean.

I have a 2007 bruteforce 750 it backfires thru carb and exhaust when you open the throttle exhaust pipe gets red hot starts and idles fine went thru carbs twice am thinking a timing problem

Check to make sure your intake valves are seating good. The carb that keeps popping is the one i would start with. If the valves are not seating they need to be adjusted. If adjusting doesnt fix it replace the valves before they snap off and fall on top of the piston

I have a 1998 shadow spirit 1100 i replaced the choke cable on it now it seems not to be running correct i hear a slight backfire from the exhaust on the back cylinder i checked the adjustment twice &...

The popping or backfiring is caused by air leaks in the exhaust system and unburned fuel igniting. Try replacing the copper crush o-rings between the head pipe and the head. Seal the air leak and the popping should stop. You can have an exhaust leak start any time any where. Many times exhaust systems are replaced and the gaskets are not replaced causing the popping issues.

WHAT WOULD THE PROBLEM BE IF YOUR CAR IS BACKFIRING AND MISSING?

Back fire can be caused by different faults.First is to much fuel because of worn carburetter, or wrong adjusments on carburetter. choke sticking will cause backfire. timing be out of adjustment will cause backfire exhaust leak can cause backfire. bad spark plugs, or plug leads , distributer cap worn of cracked will cause backfire as for fuel in muffler, if it combusted in muffler , the muffler would split open it is not that.
