SOURCE: 2000 HD Sportster XLH - makes "clicking" sound trying to start

Ok, If you are absolutely sure the battery is good, there are several possibilites. If the battery is over a year old, take it to an automotive parts store and ask them if they can load test it. They'll usually do this at no charge.

If the battery is good, the first problem could be in the starter relay. Look at the end of the starter from the right side of the bike. You'll see a plate on the end that is roughly shaped like a pentagon. Just above that plate is a plug with a single wire. Unplug this wire and use either a test light or a digital volt ohm meter to check for voltage when you press the starter button. If you do NOT have voltage and the clicking you are hearing is coming from under the seat, you probably need a starter relay.

If you have 12 volts on that wire, you're problem is in the starter. Disconnect the negative cable from your battery. Now, take the three small screws out of the back of the starter that holds the pentagon shaped plate on. Underneath the plate is a plunger and a spring. Remove these parts and look at the copper contacts on either side of the solenoid and on the plunger. If they are burned badly, you need to replace them. You can get the parts through an aftermarket supplier and they are not very difficult to replace. Usually, it can be done without removing the starter. Simply replace the contacts and a new plunger comes with the parts kit. Reassemble the starter, reconnect the battery cable, and you should be ready to go.

Check the fuel flow through your petcock. In 1996, Harley went to a vacuum operated fuel petcock. Vacuum from the engine opens the petcock, when the engine is not running and no vacuum, the petcock closes. These things give a lot of trouble. If there is a hole in the diaphragm or a cracked or loose vacuum hose, no fuel flow or insufficient fuel flow. If you have a hand operated vacuum pump, connect it to the backside of the petcock, Apply a little vacuum and see if it "holds" or if it leaks down. Disconnect the fuel line and see if the fuel flow looks sufficient. If not in either case, you'll have to take the petcock out and take the rear plate off. Take note of how the parts come out. Hold the diaphragm up to the light and gently stretch it looking for holes. If you find a hole, replace the diaphragm. Check the petcock to make sure no passageways are blocked. Personally, I suggest changing the petcock to a high quality replacement manually operated petcock. Problem solved permanently.

SOURCE: 2003 sportster wont start after it gets hot..fine

Sounds like the fuel in the float bowl is percolating. This means the fuel in the float bowl heats up and boils when you shut the engine down. Don't worry, it won't explode or anything. I've seen this quite often even on carburetor equipped automobiles. In a car, it's called a "vapor lock". The trick is to get the engine to run cooler. You engine is jetted very lean so that it meets EPA emission standards. Because it's fuel air mixture is so lean, it's running hot. Take the bike to a performance oriented shop and have them richen the carb up to the next richer slow speed jet and readjust the idle mixture screw. They may want to put a 0.020: shim under the needle to richen up the mid-range mixture a bit as well.

Good Luck

have you checked the battery to see if it is flat? make sure it is fully charged before testing the electrical system with a multi meter as you wont get the right readings. check the fuses under the seat to see if there are any that may have blown.

Check your batt. cables  good, especi ally the terminal ends. Pull and twist them to make sure they aren't almost burnt or worn into. This same thing happened to my nephew's 1200 Sportster. Pos. cable was almost completely into INSIDE the insulation near the battery terminal.

95 sportster wont start. Everything was running fine until now.

do a basic test .try starting the bike, then take out a spark plug. is it wet or dry? if its dry, no gas getting into the combustion chamber. if its wet, place the thread of the pluged in spark plug against any engine metal, crank the engine and look for a good blue spark. no spark or an orange spark means ignition problem.

Speedo, turn signals, brake lights, horn stopped working. All else is fine.

Gap your plugs to 38 thou. Check all your bulbs (one burned out will affect the rest) Take a look at all your fuses and make sure they are all ok. Otherwise you are probably looking at a wiring short which will require trouble shooting of the elctrical system. Buy your self a service manual for your bike, this will help you a lot.
