1985 Yamaha xj700 Maxim- I'm not for sure how to hook up the fuel hoses to the petcock.Does the breather hose on the rubber boot connect to the in line on the petcock?Thanks for any help!!!
Yes, the breather line hooks to the petcock on the line facing the back, the fuel line hooks to the larger one. the line from the breather is actually a vacume line that turns on the fuel, without it you will not get fuel out of the petcock unless it is in the prime position.

Large line is fuel, from tank to petcock. Large line from petcock to Carb. small line is vacumn from intake manifold to petcock (small spigot). suck on this line & make sure Gas comes through Large line to Carb.
I'm guessing that the fuel block you refer to is the inner side of the petcock assembly. If this is so, the larger line is the fuel supply and connects to a swivel pipe in between two of the carburetors and feeds all four through internal piping. The second smaller hose is a vacuum line to operate the petcock and runs from one of the rubber carb mounts to the petcock. My 85' model also has four vent hoses running from the top front part of each carb back and down between each one. I hop this helps.
There are two lines coming out of the fuel petcock (shut-off valve). The small diameter one is a vacum line that connects to the top of the rubber intake located between the carb and the engine head. you should notice that all four intakes have a vacum port in this location and they should all be capped excet one - usually #2.
The second line of the fuel petcock is the larger diameter one, and is the fuel line. Make sure you install an in-line filter if it has been lost. The fuel line connects to the carb on a pipe that feeds all four carbs. The pipe is located on the lower portion of the carb, down by the float bowls. There will be a connection port between #2 and #3 (right in the middle of the carb assembly). It will be difficult to see when everything is assembled and even more dificult to reach.
There's only two , on the Ca. model , sitting on the bike second cylinder from left, the synching port goes to the petcock -on the carb joint nearest the block- It would be the only boot without a black cap n a spring clamp .And (it'll be a long hose) goes to the emissions can behind the air box on the right from the carb itself.(it has a plastic cover over it) Anything behind the carbs (between 1n2 then 3n4 ) is over flow tubes to the bottom of the frame.
All engines need the same three to four things to work correctly.. Compression, Fuel, Spark, (timing).... But, usually those bikes, have fuel issues. The fuel tank spigot has a vacuum controlled valve which when the engine is cranked, suction is applied and fuel then can flow. Second,, the needle and float in the carb tend to get gummed up along with the main and idle jet... You need to make sure the carb is maticulously clean, Using carb cleaner, and tag wire,, or a piece of fine wire ( be careful not to enlarge the tiny holes). Keep refering to the 3-4 list fuel, compression, Spark,,,timing..... Good luck...!! Rib
