WHY would I have oil in where my flywheel and coil packs are on the right side of the motor under the cover there never been oil there be for on a 1979 Yamaha XS 1100 special
I haven't looked at a XS 1100 for many years, but my first guess is a leaking crankshaft oil seal. 1979 is a long time ago, 35 years to be exact, and if your bike is still running well, it deserves to have a leak here and there.
If the oil leak is not too much, keep an eye on the oil level in the engine and enjoy the ride, else you have to pull off the coil packs and flywheel (probably dry clutch assembly) to get to the oil seal. The best would be to have a bike shop look at it if it really bothers you.
Keep the air in your hair, your feet on the grass and the bears off your rear (view mirror). Oh yes, put a piece of rag on the floor under the engine when you park it!

It is part of a detent mechanism for the choke. No, all 4 carbs do not have them, only 1.
Here is a link to Yamaha's website, where you can pull up a diagram of your bike's carbs. The ball is #10 and there is also a spring with it.

They are saying there are 2 balls and 2 springs, but I do not remember them having 2. I also don't see another #10 or #11 on the picture anywhere. You should be able to look at the rod that connects all the chokes together and see if there are 2 sets of dimples for the balls. Obviously there will be one set in carb #1, if you find another set of dimples for a detent ball, then there indeed would be 2. Also, the carb body would be drilled for the spring and ball like the #1 carb is.
