You have a problem because a Harley rattles??? That is like saying you have a problem with English bikes leaking oil.

  • jfhinton45 Nov 22, 2014

The newer Harleys should not rattle.

  • jfhinton45 Nov 22, 2014

Post more info if you still have the rattle problem OR post your solution if you got it fixed. Thanks

sounds like the chain is way to tight readjust clutch and tensioner and check for noise. you may even wanna run a charge test to see if you have stator problems or a loose compensator nut

SOURCE: transmission engagment issues

First thing to do is to check the shifter pawl adjustment. If you do not have a service manual then you need to get one. It will explain how to adjust shifter pawl and save you money on many other problems down the road.

SOURCE: 2004 Harley Davidson Rattle in Primary

Pretty hard to offer suggestion with so little info.

If chain drive could be chains too loose.

Check oil level.

Get M/C shop to check......alot of good money at stake there.

SOURCE: clutch wont dis engage cant find nuetra;

You either need to adjust your clutch, you have too much oil in your primary, or your throwout bearing has failed.

To adjust the clutch, follow the clutch cable until you find the rubber bellows near the down tubes of the frame. Slide the bellow up or down to gain access to the adjuster. Loosen the lock nut and adjust the adjuster inwards making the cable as short as possible.

Now, remove the derby cover on the outer primary cover. In the center of the clutch assembly you'll see an adjuster screw and locknut. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster clockwise until you feel a resistance. You don't want to force the adjuster screw as you'll start to release the clutch, go in just until you feel resistance. You may wish to do this several times until you get the feel for it. Once you feel the resistance, back out 1/2 to 1 full turn and lock the locknut. Reinstall the derby cover.

Now, go back to the cable adjuster and adjust the adjuster outward, making the cable longer, until you get about an 1/8" freeplay at the clutch lever. Lock the locknut and reposition the bellows. This should allow your clutch to release.

If you have too much oil in your primary, it will cause your clutch to drag and make it impossible to find neutral with the engine running. The oil level should be no higher than the bottom of the clutch spring with the bike standing straight up.

If you're experiencing difficulty shifting through the rest of the gears, You may have lost a throw out bearing. To replace the throwout bearing, you'll have to pull the chrome clutch release cover off the right side of the transmission.

Good Luck

Does the noise happen only when you pull in on the clutch (disengage the clutch), and go away when you let the clutch out (engage the clutch)?

If so, that's the clutch plates rattling until the spring load is reapplied to clamp the up.

This thing suxs

Right about 1 quart (give or take about and fluid ounce or two).

Two ways to judge:

1: hold bike upright, remove derby cover (over clutch pack).
Pour primary fluid through derby cover hole until level comes up to just the bottom of the clutch plates.

------------------------OR-------------------

2: With bike on kick stand, pour fluid through derby cover opening until level is just below the derby cover opening.

When i engage eiather 1st or 2nd gear from neutral bike seems to grab and make a clunk noise, once rolling no problems

Older 4 speed transmissions were known for their "clunk" going into 1st gear.

However, even though you didn't give a model year, I'll assume you mean something newer than those.

If it "grabs" when going from neutral to 1st (bike wants to "jump"), it usually means the clutch push rod (under the primary cover's "Derby cover) needs adjustment, followed by the clutch cable.

As far as the leak where the cable enters the transmission, there is an "o-ring" seal that might need replacing.

Hello I own a 05 1200c sportster. I was about to go for a quick ride one day and just as I was going to put the bike on neutral some how I shifted wrong, resulting with the Final Belt drive snapping! I...

The first and easiest thing to check is the primary chain tension. In the middle of the top run, you should have 3/8" to 1/2" up and down play with the engine cold. Check this through the small hole in the top of the outer primary cover. Adjust with the adjuster screw on the underside of the cover. Also look on the inside of the outer cover to see if the sprocket shaft nut has come loose and is rubbing the cover. It could also be a magnet in the rotor on your alternator has come loose. To check that, you'll have to pull the primary chain, engine sprocket, and clutch assembly off to get the rotor off. The mainshaft nut that holds the clutch on had left handed threads.

How much oil does the primary hold

It depends on the bike but gernerally it's a quart of oil whether it's a Sportster or Big Twin. On the big twins, it's acutally 36-44 ounces. Stand the bike straight up and remove the derby cover, drain the primary, and refill until the oil comes to the bottom to the outer clutch drum, the aluminum right around the outside edge of the clutch assembly. Do not overfill with either model bike as the clutch will drag making it impossible to find neutral with the engine running.

How much chain case lube should you put in for a 2005 softail deluxe

The primary case takes 36-44 ounces of oil. Stand the bike as straight up as you can safely get it. Remove the derby cover from the primary cover. Fill the primary case until the oil comes up to the lower edge of the outer clutch drum. That's the shiny aluminum ring on the outside of the clutch assembly. Do not overfill or the clutch will drag making finding neutral with the engine running next to impossible.

It seems you have a clutch issue Inspect Clutch plates, clutch Pressure cover, Clutch cable.
It may just be a case of clutch cable slightly too loose

You should have about 3MM play on clutch handle so un-tighten till you can move clutch about 3mm without effort then it should be set about right.

Replaced clutch, oil, cables...1998 electra glide classic..bike is hard to get into neutral once it is warmed up..

Make sure you do not overfill the primary. when putting the oil in the primary, have the bikes standing as straight up as possible. Add oil only until it comes to the bottom of the clutch spring. If you put too much oil in the primary, the oil will get in between the plates when the clutch is released and act like the oil in a automatic transmission torque converter. It will continue to drive just enough so that you cannot find neutral with the engine running.

Otherwise, you must make sure all clutch adjustments are correct. Loosen clutch cable all the way. Adjust clutch release adjuster behind derby cover, all the way in and back off one half to one complete turn, readjust cable for 1/8" freeplay.
