SOURCE: dies at idle

  1. Carb jets may still be dirty or improperly sized.
  2. The Cam and/or Cam journals are worn down and allowing some play in the timing.(Very common on the XR's)
Sounds more like carb or timing issues to me

The stator could be going, but it doesn't sound like this is your issue.

SOURCE: honda 1300c backfire through carb at wide open

If you have used Dyno jet kit I have had a kit come through with smaller main jets than the stock ones causing it to run way to lean.

your pilot jets may need to be replaced as your engine is using them at low & idle speeds, not sure if you can obtain them though

SOURCE: On my 72 cb100 when I pull the clutch in, the bike

The slow circuit of the carburetor is dirty. Take the carburetor off and remove the slow and main jets. Shoot carburetor cleaner through the jets and through the passageways of the carburetor body to be sure that it is clear. Does the bike die when you pull in the clutch and put it into gear? If it dies when you put it in to gear , you may have clutch plates that are stuck together. Take off the engine side cover, remove the clutch springs, pull out the clutch boss and the clutch plates. Carefully separate the plates, replace any damaged plates, coat the plates with oil and put them back in the same order. This should make the clutch act normally again.

your main jet is clogged up, or your float level is too low. remove float bowl and remove jets and clean them, using carb cleaner and a strand of copper speaker wire.

Fuel air lock

Could be some internal carb problems. Especially if the carb is original, or if it is a rebuilt off the shelf. The internal parts can get old and stop working, such as the accelerator pump.
