There are 2 coils. The coil on the left provides spark for cylinders 1 & 4. The coil on the right provides spark for cylinders 2 & 3. The firing order is 1-2-4-3.
In case you don't know, this little tidbit is something to carry with you for life: Whenever a reference is made to a place in or on a vehicle, it is ALWAYS the perspective "from-left-to-right" of the seated vehicle operator.
In other words, in your case, as you're sitting on the bike, cylinder #1 is the one furthest to your left, and #4 is furthest to your right.
http://www.thegsresources.com. This group of guys are the best! The forum is full of people who will help, plus several guys have pages devoted to carb rebuilding, your wiring diagrams should be on there somewhere... Good luck!

Go to this site and you can download a free PDF service manual. www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp They have a single manual for a GS750. It is for a 1976. That is close enough to your '78 to still be very useable.
Go to this site and you can download a free PDF service manual. There is a '76 manual there. It is close enough to your '78 to be extremely helpful as not much of anything changed in those two years. The listing just says "Suzuki GS750 ". Page 90 has a diagram. Page 93 says to mix 50/50 10w30 motor oil and standard ATF (automatic transmission fliuid) for the fork oil. You do not need to tear down the forks to install a new seal and the seal can be installed without the special tool. www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
