Engine stalls, p0720 engine light on. Runs ok than goes sporadic.

There are 2 possibilities here:
1.- There may be a problem with the new speed sensor, the electrical wiring between the speed sensor and the PCM, or an internal PCM problem. To see if VSS signal is present at the PCM a scan tool capable of displaying live data is required.

2.- There is a recall action on this model year for erroneous speed sensor signals; the cure is an updated software calibration. If your truck has not yet had the updated calibration installed, you should call your local Dodge dealership with your VIN number and ask the service department to check to see if there are any open recall actions on your vehicle. If the software calibration has not been updated yet, they will perform this procedure free of charge for you. If you do not have the current software calibration in your PCM to correct the VSS issue, you need to have this done before proceeding any further with attempting to diagnose this problem

This sensor is located at the rear of the transmission.

Symptom: P-0720 LOW OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR RPM, ABOVE 15 MPH
When Monitored and Set Condition: P-0720 LOW OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR RPM, ABOVE 15 MPH

When Monitored: Continuously with the key on, engine running, and gear selector not in park or neutral.
Set Condition: This code is set if the vehicle speed (as determined from the vehicle speed sensor), is above 15 MPH, and the output shaft speed is below 60 RPM for 2.6 seconds.

POSSIBLE CAUSES DTC CODE RETURNS:
OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR DEFECTIVE
PARK/NEUTRAL SWITCH CODE PRESENT
OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN
OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
PCM DEFECTIVE (DRB SHOWS > 60 RPM)
OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR HARNESS OBSERVABLE DEFECT
OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR WIRING HARNESS INTERMITTENT DEFECTIVE

Hope helps.

How do you get diagnostic codes for my 2001 flhtci?

Two ways to retrive those codes. One push and hold the odometer/ trip button. Then turn on the ignition. You should get a sweep test on your gauges. When you do that you should have do1 show up in your odometer. as you push the trip reset button it should cycle through them. do1 Clr, do2 Clr. You will have either Clr or Set. Depending on which one is set will tell you where the problem is. The other option is Take it to a dealer and have them scan the bike with there computer. Below is the list of 1-10 Codes and what it means if one is set. Hope this helps

MY TROUBLE LIGHT IS STAYING ON

2000-2004

The Diagnostic Mode is entered by turning the ignition from OFF to ON while holding the reset switch in. The normal power-up sequence will occur before entering the diagnostic mode. Diagnostic codes set during this power-up sequence will be stored as well.

Important Note: Be sure no diagnostic codes are indicated before reset is held in for more than 5 seconds or diagnostic information will be lost.

When in diagnostic mode the odometer will display the first diagnostic code. When the trip switch is pressed again the next code will be shown. If the trip switch is pressed for more than 5 seconds at any time while in the diagnostic mode, the diagnostic code displayed will be erased.

There are 7 different diagnostic codes available. They are as follows:
d01 - Speed sensor power output shorted low
d02 - Speed sensor power output shorted high or open
d03 - Not Used
d04 - Not Used
d05 - Speed sensor return shorted high
d06 - Speed sensor return shorted low
d07 - Not Used
d08 - Speedometer power over voltage
d09 - Speed output shorted high
d10 - Speed output shorted low or open
CAL XX - Speedometer application calibration number:
14 = Domestic
15 = HDI

When in the diagnostic mode, all codes are displayed in sequence from d01 to d10.

As a code appears in the display (for instance d02), it will read "d02Set" if set or "d02CLr" if clear.

The diagnostic mode is exited either by turning ignition from ON to OFF to ON again without depressing the reset switch or if a speed signal greater than 5 MPH is detected.

Diagnostics cannot be performed if system voltage is less than 9 VDC or greater than 16 VDC. The only exception is d08 which is set when system voltage is greater than 16 VDC.

After all the diagnostic codes are displayed, the speedometer calibration number is displayed (CAL 14 for example).

2000 FLHRI turns over but won't start

Hi,
I found this info for you.  Have you tried the built in diagnostic in your speedometer? You can access them by:

1) While you ignition is off hold the reset button
2) Turn the key to the on position.

Now from each reset button push the speedometer will test the following:

d01 Speed sensor power output shorted low
d02 Speed sensor power output shorted high or open
d03 Not Used
d04 Not Used
d05 Speed sensor return shorted high
d06 Speed sensor return shorted low
d07 Not Used
d08 Speedometer power over voltage
d09 Speed output shorted high
d10 Speed output shorted low or open

The last number CAL14 is the calibration number.
To reset all codes while in diagnostic mode, hold the reset button in for 5 seconds.

Each test will read dXXSEt if there is a problem, or dXXCLr if there is not. (XX being the number of the list above) The

From what I can tell it will test if your speed sensor, speedometer, or wiring is the problem.

Hope it helps. Cheers
regards robotek
