I bought the bike about 2 months ago & it had sat covered in a garage for about a year & 1/2. I've replaced the battery, spark plugs, & I've tested the coils & they both test at 3.8 ohms. She will fire right up & run (actually sounds good), but for some reason that I can't figure out, the front cylinder exhaust/pipe isn't getting hot...I thought maybe a fuel problem, but I noticed when I pulled the plug from the front cylinder, I could smell gas, so I'm assuming it's not a fuel issue...HELP!!!!
You are Not getting spark to ur front cylinder. Swap your spark plug, if not then replace your front plug wire. if this is still not the problem ad you are sure the coil is good then look into the wire that gives the coil signal to fire
Thanks...only problem is, that the older honda VT's have 2 plugs per cylinder. Suppose just one of the wires were bad on the front cylinder, would it still not fire enough for the front cylinder to run/get hot?
I'm not a mechanic or a wire chaser, lol & am really trying to figure out/do the work myself & avoid taking her to a shop...Any & all help is more appreciated than you know!
yes if one was firing it would get warm. do the wires end up at the same source? this may be easier to resolve with having 2 plugs /cyl. check the triger wire
Not sure...just downloaded/printed the wiring diagram for that model...when you say "trigger wire" are you talking about the wires that go from the coils to the pulse generator/s?...prolly a dumb question I know, but like I said before, I'm NOT a mechanic & don't pretend to be, lol
no such thing as a dumb question jj. and yes, that's the wire I was refering to. if the plugs are good, plug wires are good & the coil checks out then it is more than likeley that wire which gets its pulse from the electronics by the crank shaft. a wiring diagram should help you tons!
Thank you, I really appreciate the help!

I have about same problem.. my Honda VT500C sometimes shots down on the bag cyl. ive cleened the carb. controled CDI box (both). messured the the Coil (i belive its called.. im from denmark ;) ) ive adjusted the valve 0,10 in- 0,10 out. ive synced the carb.
what what my prob is = when i stard from low rpm.. from a green light or low driving in a roundabout.. when i then try to accelrate it shots down.. same when i go like 90 -100kmt and give full throttle it shots down.. on bag cyl... any idea... anyone..
i hope i make sence im from Denmark so english isent that good ;)
You need 3 things for normal engine operation 1. fuel - coming from carburetor (you have 2, one for each cylinder, gas is coming in to cyl. by vacum produce from 2 valves) so, run the bike for 5min, stop the enginea, the front spark must be wet, if it is not, you have dirty carburetor, you have to clean them, drain the fuel and take them of the engine,
2. you need spark - disconnect the sp. plugs, take them out, connect one, run the engine and check the spark (you have to take all 4 plugs out and first try front one-do this in darker space, you can not see spark on the sun)
3. air - this one is not that important for basic engine operation, for fine tuning - the small lines in the carburetor have to be clean and diaphragem must be whole.

As I think, you have a problem with clogged main jet, You have 2 jets, slow and main, slow is for idle, for semi trottle you combine slow and main jets, full trottle just main jet, so, clean jets and 1st let out gas from carbs, (if you turn around the carbs with gas in, this can clogged the air passeges in the carbs)
