Surprised that your mechanic didn't mention the spark plug. The wrong plug type is a major cause of overheating. Speak nicely to your local Honda dealer and ask his advice. You don't have to buy your plugs from him once you know which one you need visit your local motor factors the difference in cost will shock you.

I've never been a big fan of automotive oil in a bike. That being said, maybe the Castrol can be used in bikes too I don't know. Anyhow, hopefully someone will be along that can better answer that part of your question. There have been many discussions pertaining to what oil to use. Drop a PM to OilDoc. He can probably answer that question very quickly for you. If this was a car, I'd say that the thermostat was stuck. Maybe start there.

I don't know if this is your problem but I would check and make sure you have oil flow through you oil cooler

chances are that your water pump could be bad or thermostat could be stuck closed if you can locate the thermostat housing warm the motor up and see if the hose's on both sides of the thermostat housing are warm if it is it most likely the water pump and youll want to keep a 70/30 mixture of water and antifreeze it the radiator when filling their should be a air bleed screw some where on the cooling system to bleed any air out of cooling system while your filling it

I havn't a clue what you are taking about. The cb400ss ( mine, anyway ) is air cooled, it does not have a radiator,and certainly no temperatur e guage or temp warning light. How do you know it is overheating, and at what temp. it is running at ?

A lot of shadows run high on the gauge. I would be concerned if the fan never turned on when in the red /or if the fan ran constantly. You may just have a gauge that reads really high. I ride a Goldwing and totally ignore my gas gauge(it reads empty for half a tank)and my temp gauge many times does not come on at all. My fan does work, but it never kicks in, therefore i am not overheating. Both items are annoying but not worth fixing since they only back up other systems and are mostly there for looks. There are some antifreeze modifiers like "ICE" that are used in racing where antifreeze is not allowed. One of these may help lower a potentially high temperature. But may not be necessary.
