Have you installed after market open pipes? with fuel injection, the computer module can adjust to a certain point, then you need an afetermarket module. the fuel is to lean, which on a carb model you would adjust the jets. extra hot pipes most likely cause is to lean a fuel mixture, with most harleys caused by no muffler exhaust. this will also explain the high idle.

SOURCE: I have a 2001 softail duece, fuel injected that

If it's fuel injected, the dealer will have to set the idle speed for you unless you have another type of computer on the bike.

Engine idling high

Idle speed control valve stuck(clean with carb cleaner), possible split in vacuum pipe or one has come off. Check all vac pipes, spray around vac pipes with the carb cleaner with the engine running, see if engine speed changes, if it does you have a vac leak.

My 200 harley duece hesitates and dies while idling or when there is no gas given

Hello,
You will need to find the idle adjustment screw located on the carburetor next to where the throttle cables terminate and bring the RPM's up to roughly 1000 rpm's (the usual range can be anywhere between 500 to 1500 rpm's depending on your preference and the bike's reactions) to avoid the stalling and hesitation that you are currently experiencing!
Good luck

before you spen money on a idle control valve look at the engine breather pipes, and look good for a split or perished pipe

Back firing will not idle properly

try cleaner in fuel, and make sure exhaust is not letting fresh cold air into the tailpipe(backfiring is sometimes caused by fresh air in fuel rich hot pipe). If cleaner helps but doesnt solve the prob. you may need to clean the fuel system, deposits may flush away, but solids in the system would need to be removed by open up and clean out the orfaces and jets etc.

Idles real high then dies and gets pipe red hot.

Sounds like you have too much fuel entering the engine .check the spark plug and see what colour it is .it should be a brownish pink .

2003 escape idling to high, exhaust pipes turning orange red, not cataylic

Hi Whitewolf108,

Is your vehicle a turbo diesel? or if it's petrol, again does it have a turbo?.... The turbo can often cause the effect that your explaining, regarding the orange glow from the exhaust manifold.... To give any more advice, I'll need more info from you....Example: do you live at a high altitude?.....The type of engine?....Any modifications bolted on?.... When did the idling become too high, was anything done to the carburation around that time?
