If it is a two stroke it will be in the crank area and not gearbox but as this is a 4 stroke the crank oil and gearbox oil are all in one ,you will need to change the oil and filter as well cheers pete

SOURCE: cr 500 carburator

This sounds to me like a carb float being stuck open. Turn off the gas and drain the offending carb. Next, turn the gas back on and sharply tap the float bowl with the plastic handle of a screwdriver as the fuel bowl refills. The goal here is to vibrate the float to free it up. If doing this process a couple of times does not free the float I would remove the carb and clean it with a spray carb cleaner. Clean the air filter then re-mount carb. Next Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ). Install an inline fuel filter.

SOURCE: need setting for carb. adjuster on bottom of carb

Turn the adjusting screw all the way in until it LIGHTLY seats. Now back it out one and one half turns. Do the same adjustment for the throttle screw on the right side of the carb. You are now back to the stock factory settings.

Could you take a moment and rate my answer? Thanks!

You are rite float stuck, you can clean the carb with carb cleaner, fresh fuen and cleaner in the gas may clear it up. if fuel stops running all over but still pops and backfire still a problem carbs need to be taken apart and cleaned.if u have experience u could do it.if not it might cost more to have it fixed after you try, lots of small pieces to deal with.

SOURCE: Over flow tube is leaking gas on a new cmx250

If its the overflow, cleaning the sticky carb float could be simple fix.
Turn off fuel, drain the carb, with drain open spray carb cleaner into the bowl through the drain.(enough to rinse away varnish) then try it out, if all is good you are done. If it still runs gas out you will need to open the carb up to clean out the trash.

SOURCE: leaking gas from overflow hose

Double check the float needle seat. Often a piece of debris will lodge itself under the needle. Check your fuel tank/fuel valve for debris or damage to the strainer screen on the fuel valve.

I'm getting gas in my oil my generator only has about 100 hrs of run time on it

We are sorry to hear the carb is leaking. This happens when the Carb Float Needle gets stuck and is easy to rectify.
If you watch this video on YouTube it will show you how to free up the Float Needle. It is the same procedure on all Carbs:

Possibly a stuck float or needle and seat in carb. Try turning gas off when unit is not in use. If this doesn't help you will need to check carb for stuck needle , seat, float, etc.

If your JD has a float type carb, the problem lies in there as the float is bad or the needle stuck in the open position allowing gas into the crankcase via the cylinder. rebuild the carb and check the float to make sure there is no holein it causing it to sink. Needle and seat should be replaced and new one adjusted. Also you may want to change out the oil with the gas in it as it will destroy the bottom end of your motor if left mixed in.

I have a 1988 750 Virago I just rebuilt my carbs so I decided to change the oil also and I found that there was gas in the oil. What could cause this.

hiya

when you rebuilt the carbs did you adjust the floats or needles because it sounds like you are flooding and the gas is leaking out

Drained oil and found a lot of gas in oil what would cause this.

very common problem.......the carburetor inlet needle is not sealing off the gas flow from the fuel tank, gravity overcomes the float in the carb and fuel pours over into the cylinder and up into the pcv tube and breather assembly, the best and easiest fix it to rebuild the carb but if money is tight the needle and seat can be replaced at a minimal 10 dollars if u do it your self good luck and hope this helps i use toro's carb tool to do the repair

the part number for the tools are 81-5980 and 81-5990 they are a godsend when trying to remove stubborn inlett seats

Well there only one way the fuel can get into the crankcase and that's from the fuel tank. The petcock must be draining and the float needles are not stopping the fuel flow. Do you have a prime position on the petcock? If so do not run the bike in the position. Try topping the tank off with gas and letting it sit for a while and see is the gas has gone down and then check the crankcase and see if there's fuel in it again. i still say its got to be your petcock.

Fuel in the crankcase

Your float valve is sticking - the carb fills up, the fuel runs out through the carb into the engine.
Get a new float valve, until then - turn the fuel off at night.
