I have a 2001 VL 1500. i changed the oil and there was barely any oil in the bike. So i filled up the bike/oil change and 2 days later went for a ride. Might of put 40 miles on it and noticed that i was leaking a little oil. so started tearing it apart and noticed that oild was all over my air filter like it had shot oil up through my carbs, then noticed that The previous owner had bipassed the second air assembly which i did not know. so i replaced that and got a new air filter and put everything back together and it started right up with no smoking what so ever. Drove the bike the very next day and might have put another 60 miles on it and was at a red light and was reving it up and when i stopped it had started smoking from around the engine and i could not see where it was coming from and then the bike died. I didn't try and restart it cause i didn't want to do any more damage. Noticed that i had a couple drops of oil on the batter and a couple drops in between my 2 cylinders and a couple drops on the ground. I haven't taken it back apart yet but im stumped on what it could be. Im not good at diagnosing but instead good at fixing when i know what the problem is.
Gday there kenneth this sounds like the seller before was trying to stop the engine from smoking ,this is a old trick you do not put much oil in to the motor so the compression when it pushes past the worn rings pressurerises the engine cases and pushes oil out of the breather hole into the airbox this is why when you filled it and put the hose back to the air filter it was smoking .best thing to do is check your spark plugs and see if there oiled up if they are see if you have a mate with a engine compression gauge and check the compression this will more than likely be it .if not take it too your dealer and let him do the test for you .hope this helps cheers

Getta clymer manual--for dtailed repair--gaskets probly worn--a synthetic oil like amsoil or moblie one will keep internal seals alive

It could be that you have to much oil in the crank case. I overfilled mind and my son could not ride his machine behind me, due to the smoke. Otherwise drain the carb (small bolt under the float chamber. Good Luck

Hi,
You made a mistake sorry, should have not put oil in. Take it straight back to shop, ask them on phone what type of oil they put in, say you want it in writing. Don't tell them why yet. Then, with a witness, drain some oil as a sample, get witness to keep it. Then take bike to shop and tell them what happened. Drain oil sample at shop to compare, if they don't rebuild your motor, tell them you have a sample to take to analyst etc etc.
Thanks,
Adam.

The smoke that came from it i think came from the oil dripping on the exhaust. but i dont know where it came from
Thankyou so much for getting back to me with this response. I will definitely try that out on the compression.
