1981 550 to 650 engine swap

I have a 1981 xj550 with a bad engine, I bought a parts bike with a good engine but its a 650, and has a shaft drive instead of a chain, can they be swapped ? It looks like the frame is a bit different, any advice?

I looked on Babbits online, and according to the part numbers the wire harness on the 650 and the 550 is the same, i know the two engines look pretty close and the bolt on parts are all interchangeable from what ive found so far, so aside from the swing arm..I guess I may be ok.

The only thing you could possibly do is change out your swing arm off the 650 and put it on the 550 but you may also have to change out the wiring harness as well to get the 650 running properly

Speedo cable on 1983 yamaha xj550 snapped immediately after install

Better and cheaper to take it to a bike mechanic. It cost you already for the cable and you may break another if you continue to try your own repairs.

Transmission swaps?

you will need so mane parts off a chain drive model, wheel/casings/transmission shaft etc you would need to find a chain drive model to start with, you wont get all the parts you need from the bike shop, the transmissions are part of the engine assembly

There is a universal joint in the drive train that can go bad. It may require you removing the drive shaft side of the engine covers but you can access it yourself and I suspect you will see the problem.
You're not having any problems with the bike in any particular gear are you?
If you like to DIY I can send you a very good link to a website that has exploded views of your engine and the parts you may need. You can even purchase the parts from these people at a very reasonable price.
Just let me know if you need further assistance.
