My guess is a bent rod caused by hydro locking a cylinder with water. I've seen it alot in mustangs and crown vics. Your water soaked air filter is a dead giveaway.
my good friend the tap noise you have is not only due to taps failure. Is also coming due to not good oil viscosity and how often you do oil change. My Advice is to do and engine oil flush with a Restore flusher for 40 minutes then drain your old oil drain the old filter and after re-use the old filter with 2 liters of new oil and restart the car and leave it for 10 minutes and then renew oil & filter and use again the Restore friction reducer and every 3000 miles do oil change. If your valves are adjustable do the valve clearance,if not try every 3000 miles to do the same flush way I recommend. It will work unless is a long time working with the tap noise where surely caused damage . Good Luck and let me know with the outcome.
Your engine is equipped with hydraulic tappets just like your car engine has. There is no way or need to adjust the valves. If you're hearing a slight tapping noise under the rocker box covers, this is normal. If you're hearing a loud tapping noise that comes and goes, it could be a roller on the end of a tappet going bad and you should have it looked into.
Knocks, Rattles, Whining, Clunks, and Grinding noises coming from the engine are not good signs.
Light Tapping noise could be a few things.
A dirty oil filter will cause the top end to make tapping sound until the oil warms up and, then the noise goes away, that might be why you didn't hear it, but she did at first.
If the valves/rockers continue to make noise, it probably just needs the valve clearance checked & adjusted. If they continue to make noise after this, then its a sign of wear to one or more of the valve componets.(rockers worn, lifters worn etc)
With only 18000 miles, its probably just dirty oil filter.
When you hear some tapping, that's why you need -valve adjustments. At 137,000miles you probably need more than that to continue your trouble-free drives.
need tohave your valves ajusted. intake valves should be about 5-thousnds, and exhasut should be about 7-thousands. be in all, the slite tap you are hearing will not hurt anything. Sometimes times a little lose is good to keep from bending a valve.
