I have a GSXR 1000-'02 with a hot temp problem. changed the coolant and it still runs hot. could it be the thermostat?

  • rookiecruise May 13, 2009

Thanks, got to try the thermostat. The bike had been running fine, until one run through the city at slow speed caused it to over heat and blow all the coolant out. After refilling the fluid it ran cool until another run though the city caused the over heating again.

thanks Yeti. I pulled the thermostat out, but it needs a gasket to seal the housing, so I had to put it back in. after a refill, and bleeding the air out it seem to run ok. the good thing is my girl friend has the same bike so we rode and compared running temps. I don't think it has a head gasket problem, at least I hope it doesn't, heading to N. Carolina next week on it

It could be a sticky thermostat, you could try removing the thermostat completely and see if this clarifies the problem, there might also be a sender unit that is giving an inaccurate reading. Are you sure head gasket is not blown? Do a compression test, smell the coolant , does it smell like petrol, is the engine oil milky! Make sure the radiator is running freely and has no blockages, also check if you can obtain a thermostat that will switch at a lower temperature threshold, sometimes the manufacturer produce these for countries with hot ambient air temperatures.

Sorry to hear that it spewed out the coolant on the run through the city, that is because its bound to run hotter in slow moving traffic, i really hope its not head gasket as it sounds as though its over pressurizing, there is usually a pressure relief valve on the coolant tank or radiator, if your regularly held up in traffic how about fitting a fan, now wouldn't that be original!? I,m sure you could find a nice small one of a small Japanese car! Check the relief valve is the right one and keep an open mind about the gasket, sometimes there might be a small leak from exhaust port to internal coolant water ways, that may only show up when all metals have reached running temperature. All the best, The Yeti - Hastings.

My 2002 altima overheats. i changed radiator cap and removed thermolstat.now the temp gauge goes up and comes back down

The thermostat regulates engine temperature. Without it, there's no temp regulation, so of course the temp is going up and down. It's time to check coolant level, the radiator for plugged tubing, the water pump for proper operation. Those are the things you should have done way before removing the thermostat. That was a really bad decision.

Temp/gauge not reaching normal working temp-richer

the first thing to check is to feel if the radiator is hot, if the radiator feels hot and the engine is also hot the coolant is circulating ok then the problem is more than likely electrical, the temp gauge gets its signal from the engine control module the coolant temp sensor sends coolant temp signal to engine control module for engine managment purposes then passes it to instument pack/gauge, if the sensor was at fault you would have engine running problems also, with poss fault codes logged, if the engine and rad are cold/only warm after the engine has been run for 15 mins or so it sounds like the thermostat is stuck open but you have changed that. i have had faulty new ones in the past and have had to test them in a pan of boiling water, hope this is some help to you.

I have a 02 Grand caravan that has new radiator, termostat, one new fan. the temp gauge goes up to max hot the drops right back down in seconds. what could be the problem?

it could be you have an air lock in the cooling system
remove the rad cap from the rad, start the engine and let it run until the coolant drops (add to fill it back up) or until the coolant boils out of the rad spout.

maybe pull the heat sensor. -replace it OR clean it off, reinstall it.

Car engine temparature always show high, last two weeks temp is normal, some times come to high.i found water very hot in radiator,

Sounds like you need to replace thermostat. Thermostats open and close accordingly to engine temps. When reading goes hi usually indicates thermostat is sticking open, recirculating hot coolant. Now you mentioned it's been reading normal which makes me think this thermostat is not working consistent. So I'd change it now before it overheats and causes alot of damage. Regarding hot water in radiator, after running any time it's going to be hot, normal engine temp is around 195 degrees.

My car shows it running hot and then cold again whats up

the first thing is to check the coolant level, if coolant is full you may have a bad thermostat or a bad coolant temp sensor, when it runs hot, the best way to determine if it is hot is to check the temp at the sensor with temp checking tool.

Tempeture guage not working and heater is blowing out very little hot air on my ford galaxy

you need to get the thermostat changed. The thermostat controls how much coolant runs around the engine and sends signals to your temp gauge to indicate how hot the engine is.
if the thermostat is faulty it wont sent signals to the temp gauge and wont open up to allow coolant to run around the system. Your heating is run by coolant, behind the dash there is the heater matrix hot coolant runs into the matrix which gets blown inside the cab.
Fitting a new thermostat will fix all the heating and gauge problems. if your technical minded you can buy a thermostat from an autofactor (or ford, but they are expensive from ford). a garage will charge about £30-£100 ish for a new one.

hope this helps :-)

Frontier 2000 2.4L King Cab 100K miles. Temp guage indicates overheating. Will intermittently spike then drop to normal. Engine does not "smell" hot or run rough at any time. Grab upper hose, you can...

I've had problems with Datsun (later Nissan) engines hanging the closed thermostat until it boiled, then the thermostat released and operated normally. If you increase the small vent hole in the thermostat valve plate a small amount, the problem disappears. It seems that steam from engine operation gathers behind the thermostat sensing bulb and delays opening. The increase in vent hole size lets the steam through and allows the hot water to open the valve. Hope this helps!
