Question about 2003 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 883 Hugger

1 Answer

After riding for half hour to an hour (estimate) my Sportster (2003 883 Hugger) starts backfiring, loses power and shuts down. It seems like a fuel related problem because when it does restart, it backfires and shuts down when I try to give it gas. The 1st time I thought it was bad gas, but she's stranded me twice since new fuel. It retarts after 30 minutes or so and will ride for a little while, then starts the backfiring an dacting like she isn't getting any fuel, shuts down again. I am currently in Europe and don't have my HD Battle Buddies to help me figure it out. I'm hesitant to tow it into the local HD dealer without a clue about what wrong. I take care of easy, routine maintenance type stuff, but I'm a total new to bike mechanics. Any assistance would be appreciated.

We are having exactly the same problem at mo with ours & posted a question on here to see what other people thought, we have changed the coil on someones advice n its not that but we are now convinced that it is the ignition module breaking down, You can order new one through Jersey hd, this item is expensive but dont have to pay vat through jersey hd.

Which way should I go.already checked timing.

I would check the needle valve in the carburetor to confirm it does shut off, float level, and such in the carb. Doesn't sound like timing to me.

Yardman2003 rider mower keeps fauling the plugs and shuts down why

either your engine is seriously worn or your fuel system needs to be repaired. If the fouling is black and oily its the engine, if its wet and smells like gasoline then you need to start with the aircleaner and go onto carb,

Make sure your battery cables are tight at both ends. The ground connection on these bikes has a habit of vibrating loose.

Backfire and power loss

This is normally due to wrong setting or shifting of the igntion timing., You need to check out the firing angle and retune the engine.
Also make sure that the preignition is not due to excess fuel flow , clogging within the exhaust- which also must be checked.

Sportster timing

Time to check the firing timing and tuning of the fuel. you need to flowchart the method of timing the engine to the right timing angle. Also the fuel tuning must be redone which all requires tools and instruments to monitor and correct the settings.
Clean and reset carb, check all port , clean the plugs, adjust the gaps and checck timing settings.

2003 H-D Sportster 883 XLH backfire and sputter problem

There are two things that can cause what you describe: Lack of fuel, and lack of spark.

The easy way to eliminate is put an extra spark plug in your pocket....Ride the bike until it quits, then pull one plug wire, plug in your spark plug and hold the base of it against the block, and crank the engine, while observing the plug.

If you have spark, fuel flow issue is likely, check all filters, and strainers (in tank too). You can pull the fuel line and open the fuel valve and observe flow, but be careful of spark and fire, happens EASILY.

If you do not have spark, investigate the ignition system, if electronic, you can be overheating, usually requiring component replacement.

Backfire through carb often means timing too advanced.

2003 sportster wont start after it gets hot..fine if it sits for about an hour, has plenty of spark when it has a no start and smells of fuel

Sounds like the fuel in the float bowl is percolating. This means the fuel in the float bowl heats up and boils when you shut the engine down. Don't worry, it won't explode or anything. I've seen this quite often even on carburetor equipped automobiles. In a car, it's called a "vapor lock". The trick is to get the engine to run cooler. You engine is jetted very lean so that it meets EPA emission standards. Because it's fuel air mixture is so lean, it's running hot. Take the bike to a performance oriented shop and have them richen the carb up to the next richer slow speed jet and readjust the idle mixture screw. They may want to put a 0.020: shim under the needle to richen up the mid-range mixture a bit as well.

Good Luck
Steve

Motor starts stays running for maybe 3 to 5 minutes then shuts off then i can restart again in 5 minutes?

Starting a bike every other week and not taking it for a ride is a sure fire way to foul the plugs. this sounds like it could be your case. get a new set of plugs and replace them, but when you start it go for a ride to burn off the extra fuel built up in motor. if you want to check them first pull the plugs out and if they are black and sooty or even wet this is your problem. hope this gets you going, if you have other problem just ask.
