When I start the bike (02 Road King) the gauge comes up to the level in tank. After i drive away the gauge drops to empty and the low level light stays on. The gauge stays that way all day long.
Harley fuel gauges arent made to last more than 5-6 years....they arent worth the trouble to replace em....just reset your trip meter at each fill up and at 130 start lookin for a station Harley fuel gauges arent made to last more than 5-6 years....they arent worth the trouble to replace em....just reset your trip meter at each fill up and at 130 start lookin for a station

The cup in the fuel tank where the fuel gauge sits has rusted and has pinholes that let the fuel leak where those wires come out. I had the same issue on my 1998 Road King Classic. Take out the fuel gauge and fill the rust holes with jb weld fuel tank repair putty, let it dry ,reinstall fuel gauge. DON'T PUT THE JB WELD ON TOO THICK!!!! It makes it harder to reinstall the fuel gauge.GOOD LUCK
It could be a bad fuel gauge in the dash unit, but....
Usually it's "The bad".
The fuel level sending wipe arm and windings on the fuel sender wear and send erratic readings. The only cure is a replacement fuel gauge sender.
The check engine light should not be related to the erratic fuel readings.
"The good".
If you have over 200,000kms or 120,000 miles on your van you need a new fuel pump anyway,so have a complete assembly put in which will have a new fuel sender on it.
Hi! You definitely have a problem on the fuel float thats why the check engine light is coming out. Please replace the fuel float and you'll be good. HOpe this helps and have a good one!
very well sounds like the sending unit in the tank. Try running some octane booster and fuel injection cleaner in tank of the truck to loosen any deposits on the float.
The oxygen sensor has nothing to do with the fuel gauge. There are two possibilities for the gas gauge error, first it could be the in-tank gas level sensor or it could be a defective stepper motor which drives the gauge. A professional scan tool can determine the fuel level being sent by the in-tank sensor, if that disagrees with the gauge, then the stepper motor needs replacing.
Check the ground wire for the guage..sounds like a grounding problem...hey some of us use the tripmeter/odometer to guage our fuel...so do'nt worry about this too much.......Good Luck to you friend....Tim
Hi there,
It could be 2 things:
1. the fule sender unit is faulty
2. one of the baffles inside the tank has come loose and is interfering with the float.
Either case you'll have to pull the float out to have a look. If you are doing it yourself, make sure youtake great care as you'll be dealing with fuel and this is a high risk work.
cheers.
