you better replace your ******.the rebuilding kit is not guaranteed,it will last for 2weeks you will feel again the slippage of your gear, we have same problem before..but now my sharkie is good running condition.

The shift drum would not make any noise, ever. The drum will outlast all of us. All it does is move clockwise and counterclockwise as the rider pushes the shift lever up or down as needed. Go to an empty parking lot or roadway and start out slowly in 1st gear, slowly gaining speed. Does the knock show up? Now go into 2nd gear and slowly gain speed. Is the knock there? Do the same for all the gears. If the knock is only in one or two gears the problem is a broken gear tooth. When the broken gear is replaced, also replace any other gear the broken gear meshes with. Whatever broke the tooth also put the same pressure on the meshing tooth. If the meshing gears are not replaced you will have the pleasure, ( and expense ), of doing the repair all over again when the cracked tooth on a meshing gear decides to break off. This usually happens within the first hour of riding the "fixed" bike. If the test shows no knock in the gears, then chances are the knock is a cam chain needing to be tightened. I don't know what has not been removed so pardon me if I suggest something already removed. Remove the cylinder, intake manifold, magneto, stator, sprocket and shift lever. A case splitter is highly recommended. They don't cost that much and it makes for a clean separation. The two positioning guides will tend to hamper separation as will the crankshaft and output shaft as they slide through the bearings. That's another reason for a case splitter. Now would be a good time for new crank and output shaft bearings and seals and a new shift shaft seal. I assume the reason for the teardown is either a bent shift fork or broken gear teeth. If replacing a gear with a broken tooth or two, also replace any gears the broken gear meshes with. If you don't, you will get to do the gear repair a second time very soon after the first ride. Whatever pressure broke the teeth on one gear was also present on the meshing gear. It may look good, but it isn't. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks.

Normally, a knocking sound in a specific gear set indicates a broken gear tooth. When replacing a broken gear, replace the gear(s) it engages with as well. If you don't replace them you will have the pleasure of doing the repair job all over again when the weakened tooth on the existing gear(s) breaks off. Remember, whatever caused the problem in the first place put pressure on both the broken tooth and the gear it was engaged to at the time. Most likely is a tooth on a slider gear.

Yeah you might need a new tranny. Not even replacing the fluids or changing the filter will help bc it would make it even worse by flushing away metal parts in your gears which would eventually cause slippage then failure.

You have a broken tooth on the first gear set. This means two gears will need replaced; the drive gear and the driven gear in first gear range. DON'T just replace the gear with the broken tooth. Replace the gear it meshes with also.

If it is not broken, don't fix it. Your gears look fine just as they are. Rebuilding a gear box means replacing all gaskets, bearings and seals. Plus doing any crankshaft connecting rod repairs and shift fork replacements. Removing the gears from the shafts is not necessary unless a gear tooth or slider gear engaging stem is broken. Some of the gears are part of the shaft and can not be removed.
