Your instrument cluster ground wire may be the problem. Remove the cluster and trace the black wire to see where it connects to the chassis. Clean and tighten the connection. If the wire is damaged, splice in a new wire.
To install:
we checked.....the fuses, all of the wires from the instrument panel, and the grounds from the cluster connection to the fuses and all seemed to be normal. We couldn't find the main master ground, but all of the wires from the cluster seemed to be grounded correctly. We think the problem has to be the custer going bad. it has 126000 miles on the instrument panel. We have another ordered, but only because that is the last resort to fixing the problem. I know it is a weird temp fix, but my husband found a mild tap on top seems to jolt it just enough to make it start working again for a short while until the new cluster arrives.

GM had gauge cluster problems from 2000-2005. Bad stepper motors. On those units you have to replace the cluster or rebuild it with new stepper motors. Dealership can fix for around $150.00

No, it is the vehicle speed sensor. This part is between 40 and 90 dollars. and is relatively easy to replace. It is located at the output shaft of the transmission.
