Hesitation while riding my Honda V Star 650 While

Hesitation while riding my Honda V Star 650 While riding the bike beings to hesitate as if it is going to turn off. Recently (4months ago), I had the starter, fuel, and air filter replaced. When I get the speed up to about 60 miles it gets really bad. Can anyone provide me guidance on how to fix it. I do not want to take it back to the shop and spend unreasonable dollars when I can fix it myself.

Check the pesky fuel filter, or the carb for trash in the float bowl

1. #1 test. Obtain a 12 volt circuit tester, the type that looks like an ice pick with a wire coming out of the handle. With ignition on, hold the tip of the circuit test against the post of the coil, the post that is marked with a + The light in the tester should light up, meaning you have battery power. If you don't have electrical power there, trace back to battery to find out why. If you do have power at that point
2. Moving the the opposite side of the coil and place the tip of the tester again the post marked with a minus. With the key on, crank the engine. The light in the tester should flash. These 2 test have just tested your battery and ignition system. Bill

SOURCE: R6 hesitation when starting out

Not often i see good questions like this. I would start with riching the carbs a bit. Another possible simple solution is to get your plugs check to make sure they are firing at full capacity, either one can cause the problems you have described. My first guess though would be the carbs, it sounds like the throttle is set a bit off to what it should be at. The fact that your bike runs fine otherwise also suggests this conclusion.

Well, this depends on the degree of the hesitation. An S&S carb will have a small hesitation no matter how well you tune it. On those, I suggest that you roll the throttle on rather than snap the throttle wide open. I won't get technical as to why this happens.

On your SE carb, it's designed more like the CV carb that came on your bike from the factory. Since it's a Mikuni carb, there are usually an infinate number of variables that you can change on the carb. If you can find a supplier of the parts that will fit the carb, you can change the accelerator pump nozzle to a smaller nozzle. This will allow the same amount of fuel to be delivered to the carb when you open the throttle but over a slightly longer period of time. Or, you could go the other way. A larger nozzle delivering the pump shot over a shorter period of time. Fine tuning is an art and it can get time consuming and expensive buying all the variable parts.

My suggestion would be to roll the throttle open rather than snap it open if the hesitation is minor. In the case of a "fall on your face" hesitation, you'll have to find out what the problem with the carb is. I'd suggest diaabling the accelerator pump and changing the slow jet richer or leaner until you get it to where the engine idles like it should and revs cleanly. Then, put the accelerator pump back in but don't adjust it too rich, too large a pump shot.

A word of advice. You can tune a carb for the rest of your life trying for perfection and never achieve it. Get the carb as close as you can get and ride the bike. Do not become a "rolling mechanic". That's a person that instead of enjoying his ride, he's working on his bike in his head the whole time he's on it. Although I work on Harleys all the time, when I ride mine, I disregard every noise and thing that it does unless it just quits. If it breaks, I'll fix it when I get it home. Until then, I'm enjoying my ride. The newest bike I own is a '94 FXDWG and I love that bike.

Ride Safe.

My 2003 V Star classic FI has what feels like a miss-fire or some type of erratic hesitation at freeway speeds. Any advise?

It may be as something as simple as needing a new set of spark plugs. When was the last time you had it tuned up? You might also have condensation in the fuel - winter time does that to a bike. Maybe try some water remover in your tank.

fuel flow to cold pipe cylinder may be stopped with trash or sticky float.Resistor in plug wire for the one not firing could be bad. Try changing coil from one that is firing to the one thats not,see if that pipe gets hot or does the same thing still happen. coil ,plug wire, or fuel would be my primary focus.

There is an idle screw on the right side of the motorcycle. However, I would suggest downloading an Owners Manual from the internet just for future use. It is free if you go to the correct site.

I RIDE A 2003 650 V-STAR CUSTOM. I TOOK IT IN FOR

It sounds like they pinched the vent tube under the tank. There is a hose connected to the bottom of the tank that runs to the bottom of the bike. It allows air to enter the tank so you don't get vapor lock from the motor sucking fuel. You'll need to take the tank off and make sure the lines aren't pinching anywhere. I would call the mechanic and make him fix it and any damages to the tank.
