Sometimes while im riding my 1991 yamaha fzr and i pull on the throttle the engine will rev up but the bike will not speed up.. almost like im in neutral. It used to only happen when i was at high speeds and i would use too much throttle but now it's happening just trying to accelerate slowly in second
Replace the clutch plates or adjust the clutch cable. Try the clutch cable first. What you have is a slipping clutch. It could be that the clutch cable is too tight and so the plates aren't mating fully when you release the lever, or it could be that the plates are worn out. But as it is getting worse it is most likely to be the clutch plates are worn.

I had a simular problem on one of my other bikes. Bike will start fine, idle, rev up, but when you try to go it would spit and sputter. I found that the carbs were gummed up and not firing on all cylinder. easy way to check is start it up let it idle for a few seconds then get a spray bottle with water and spray the exhaust. if the cylinder is firing the water will sizzle if it is not it will just bead off. DO NOT do this when it is HOT this can cause many other problem only just after start up with a few minutes of running. Then you would know if you have some dead cylinders and then you can start back tracking from that because it could be carbs, plugs, coils, loose wire, but it will give you a start.

If this is in first gear only you have a transmission problem. It will require removal and dis assembly of the transmission to diagnose and repair the problem.
If it happens in all gears your clutch is either worn or out of adjustment. Much easier to replace, but still a rather large job for the home mechanic. Try adjusting the cable where it leaves the lever. There should be a lock nut and an adjustment nut located where the clutch cable leaves the handlebars. If you have a hydraulic clutch there is no adjustment other than bleeding the air out of the system.

There have an air leak between the carb and the cylinder and/or the head and cylinder. Old hard / cracked rubber fittings and O rings are usually the problem. When extra air gets into the system it leans the fuel mix and the high idle is the result. It also means the engine runs hotter. Also, cracked or broken reeds can be a source.
