Starts fine. sounds fine but dies upon putting it in gear

My suzuki intruder 800 1993 starts fine. However, when I got to put it in first gear it immediately dies on me. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Your kickstand switch is either broken or out of position. The bike kills the engine as a safety feature if it thinks the sidestand is down and the bike is put in gear while the engine is running.

You can cut the wire and by-pas the switch. Either twist the wires together or wrap electrical tape around the ends and keep them apart, whichever makes the engine not die.

Sounds corney, but take the end of the exhaust off then retry. A blocked baffle could cause that exact problem.

Suzuki Intruder VS400 with UK 'R reg'. It starts every time but soon as you put it in gear to take off it cuts out.

The most likely thing is a sticking clutch. With the ignition off, can you drop it into second gear and push it with the clutch pulled in? You say you put 'new petrol' in, so it sounds like it has been stored for a while. Clutches will often stick as the clutch plates have been under pressure for so long. Fully warm the engine before moving off until the plates free up.

And it looks like you probably mean VS1400 not VS400!

2006 Suzuki boulevard surges forward and dies when put into gear. Once put back in neutral it starts fine and put in gear again does the same thing, any ideas on what this may be?

Hi Darrell it sounds like the side stand switch is sticking. Give a squirt of wd40 and push switch in and out a few times that should sort the problem out.

Starts but when i put in gear dies, why?

If your side stand is down the safety switch will kill the motor when you put it in gear. On Suzuki's you need to have your stand up to keep the engine from killing when you put it in gear. If this is not the case, you may have a problem related to the side stand kill switch . I would start my investigation there.
