I am working on a gs750 1977 and need help installing the cams and setting the timing. I have a manual, the manual does not give full detail on this. Here are my questions; when installing the cams as i was trying to bolt down the cam caps two bolts broke from the pressure when the cam lobes are forcing the the valves open they were applying pressure to the cap bolts. I made the repair to the threads and got all new bolts. My question is what is the best way to install the cams with out putting all this pressure on the cam cap bolts? SECOND; When lining up the cam timing marks on the cam shaft gears, should the chain stay tight while bolting down the cam caps or is it ok to leave the chain with some slack then install the chain idler gear? Third; Which valves should be opened when the motor is at TDC?

You should have two lines on the cam gear, they normally run with the valve cover plane. This is with the crank at top, as you should see a mark for that. (Usually marked "T" or "F")
SOURCE: replacing the chain I realized I dont know how to line the cam
put the marks in line with the cylinder head

Without looking at it, I could only recommend that you go off the cam lobes themselves.
Or, another way I do it is to put a finger on each rocker and turn the camshaft backwards and forwards with a spanner.
What you are looking for is a point where one is going up, and the other going down.
Just keep going backwards and forwards, trying your best to pick the middle point of this action.
Then line it up with the nearest mark.
Often they will have an ignition timing mark and a TDC mark. Not sure what the third one would be though.
Hope I have helped.
