Sportster sport sppedometer problem

I have a 2000 harley sportster sport 1200 the speedometer lights up but dosent record the speed when driving and also the turn singles work but wont shut off until u do it your self

  • Anonymous Jul 02, 2012

After jumping my 2000 Sportster with a large automotive type charger my speedometer, odometer, and turn signal cancelation quit working. I checked the fuses, cleaned the sensor, checked the codes. All codes were clear except 02. I could clear this one by holding the reset in for a few seconds but it would come back on when the key was switched off and back on. With me being the cheap individual that I am my next step was to buy a used sensor off ebay. No workee. Next was a new sensor from the dealer. Still no workee. Still couldn't clear the code. Next I jacked up the rear so I could turn the wheel and try to detect sensor pulses. It was while I was fooling with this that I cleared the code with the engine running and the wheel turning in first gear. No immediate results but the next time I started the thing all was well in Harley world. I now have 2 good spare speedo sensors.

Speedometer light up mileage will not change nor does trip mileage change please help

Does the speedometer work (registers speed)? If it does, then the push button switch is faulty. If the speedo does not work (does NOT register speed) then probably the speedometer has failed.

How do I fix my stuck needle in speedometer on a 96 Harley sportster 1200

The speedometer is not repairable. You simply replace it. There are places that specialize in "restorations" of speedometers but they mostly work on original equipment speedometers for collector's grade restorations and are VERY expensive. It's cheaper to simply replace the speedo. You may want to record the mileage on the bike and you'll probably have to note on the title that the mileage shown on the new speedo is not correct when you sell the bike.

The is should be a speed drive unit on the axle that has a tab that sticks into a slot on the wheel. The lower end of the speedo cable screws into this unit.

Remove the carb soak in carb cleaner, **** out small bleed holes with a wire from a wire brush etc. One of the passageways is still clogged, or the float is sticking.

Harlys are clunky when shifting, have you tried adjusting your clutch? You also might need to adjust the primary drive belt tension.
