SOURCE: 77 harley sportster is spitting oil out of the cam cover breather

because it is breathing too heavy.
The reason into fixing that is to run a hose from the breather to a tin with a lid and run another hose from the tin the the air filter.

Rebuiling timing gears in a 2006 sportster 1200 xlc. Need a picture or reference for gear replacement and cam position

wd4ity.jpg
The cams are numbered 1 through 4 starting at the rear going towards the front. The new oil pumps do not have to be timed like the '76 and earlier models did. Install #1 cam, install #3 and #4 cams and time them with each other then install the #2 timing it with the pinion gear, the #1 and the #3 cam.

Oil for a Harley Davidson Sportster 1991

Harley-Davidson recommends their 20W50 petroleum based oil for the engine. You can use the H-D Syn 3 20W50 synthetic oil in the engine but I don't recommend it in the primary/transmission area. You can use any 20W50 oil as long as the API rating has a "C" rating for use in diesel engines. Look for the round circle somewhere on the container that had the API initials in it. It should say something like "SJ/CG". What you're looking for the "C" rating. If you wish to use a specific brand of oil, got to their website and look for their recommendations.

In the transmission, Harley recommends their Semi-Synthetic Primary and Transmission lubricant for Sportsters. The lube lubricates both the primary and the transmission on the Sportster. I don't recommmend full synthetic transmission lube on any bike built before 1995 as it will cause the gears to run noisey. In 1995, Harley changed the back cut on the gears and this made use of full synthetic lube more quiet running. Of course, you can use the full synthetic from a lubrication view point. It's just a bit noisey for my taste.

Whatever you use, make sure you go online and check the manufacturer's suggestion for use.

Not just changing oil, but is there gear oil to change, 1988 Harley 883 XL Sportster

Yes, there is oil in primary and transmission of your Sporty. To drain the oil, look for the drain plug on bottom of rear section of the primary area, back near the large round section of the primary. Drain the oil here and replace the plug. Add the oil at the top primary chain inspection port, large plug with a large "screwdriver" slot or two small bolts in it. Add 32-36 ounces of H-D "primary lubricant for Sportsters".

The sportster only has two oil fills. The engine oil fill is through the dip stick hole I use mobile 1 15-50. The primary fill is the upper access plate on the primary cover I use mobile 1 gear lube 75-90.

Can't find where to fill the Gear Oil on a 1996 1200 Sportster. Accidently emptied the wrong oil...oops!

The primary cover has two opening's, the big one is the derby cover for adjusting the clutch and such, the smaller one at the top is where you put in 1 quart of 75-90 gear lube.

You probably have to clean your clutch plates and put in new sportster gear oil.
