Wont run... 79 KZ650 cleaned carbs, new tune up, checked valves, new battery, good compression, coils spec out good but with only fair spark, cleaned kill switch, new voltage regulator... why won't it fire up and run? I've been working on bikes for over 35 yrs and this one has got me stumped.

I found a website that had you set the points with a gauge instead of static timing them and the thing fired a couple of times... I thinjk it will need new plugs and I have new NGK plug ends coming for the wires. Thanks for the info tho on the fuel and mufflers tho but I know the mufflers are clear. The biggest problem I have ever had in what I call massaging a bike back to life. Also I found that the plug wire ends also can cause a big problem because they will actually ohm out as being good but won't conduct electricity to the plugs if carbon or dirt is restricting the flow. The only way to test these is to pull the wires and put a plug in to make sure that you have a bright spark. Again thx for the advice.

Any water in the gas? Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Get a fresh set of stock NGK spark plugs. Clean or replace the air filter. You seem to be pretty thorough in what you have done, but since plugs and filter weren't mentioned I had to ask.

Assuming you are getting air, gas and spark, and the timing is correct then it should run. Right? Not necessarily. Can the bike breathe? If pressure cant get out of the tailpipe the bike won't run. Mufflers can sometimes collapse internally. This restricts the flow of burned gasses. causing backpressure. If nothing goes out of the cylinder then nothing goes in.

Try removing the exhaust pipes. Now see if it will run. Get back to me because I would like to know what you find.

I have a subaru r1700 inverter in the shop that I work at. It came in with the carb really varnished, tried cleaning it out but still it would only run for a few seconds and stop. So we have recently put...

Hello Matt,
Did you check compression and spark? I would check compression, should have at least 60 psi. Then hook up spark tester and run unit. Observe spark tester when unit dies to see if you still have spark or not when unit bogs down. This should give you a good idea where to look next. If compression is significantly under 60 psi, your looking at a tear down of engine. If your loosing spark, check flywheel gap to coil, diode stop assembly, etc. If compression and spark are good, try removing gas tank, cleaning it out well, new fuel lines, and check fuel shut off valve. These steps will help isolate problem. Also, a good old tune up never hurt either, try new spark plug and change the oil. Good luck and happy wrenching!

Bike will not start

compression under 110 get's is questionable.
check your crank bearings and seal.
also clean carb and check float level

#3&4 cyl. Have spark and fuel but air idle screws don't do anything. When warming up backfired out exhaust and carbs

Check the valve lash-sounds like valves are tight in those cylinders. Idle air screws won't do anything if the valves are tight, the motor doesn't develop vacuum when the cylinder doesn't seal. And without vacuum, carbs don't work. If the valve lash is within specs, run a compression test, most "rockets" run a minimum PSI of 150 to be within spec. Good luck!

My FZR 1000 cannot start. I have changed the spark plugs, checked the ignition coils and they are OK. I can see spark when I crank the engine. The carburattors were dirty, but I cleaned them. The fuel...

spray a little carb spray in the intake, open the trottle the whole way spray the carb spray and shut the slides try to start it. what happens did it try to start?? if so your dealing with carb stuff. i know you said that you cleaned the carbs but there a lot of little holes as im sure you know. pull your air/fuel screws and spray with carb cleaner and compressed air.
if it didn't try your valves could be out of spec. to tight and your losing compression. try the carb cleaner and let me know

My 1974 Yamaha 250 Enduro wont start I have cleaned and redone the carb. I have changed the coil pack and spark plug. Any suggestions will help Im not a mechanic by any means so not sure where to start...

you need good compression ( at least 90 psi , kicking it with the throttle open) , good crankshaft seals for sucking the fuel/air into the botton end, proper point gap and timing set for spark ( spark should be big and fat,if not the source coil is weak,, this is a flywheel magnito ignition and it needs no battery to fire the plug) if you clean the carb, make sure you also clean the choke pickup tube or it wont choke. also make sure you have the slide installed in the right direction ( not backwards and the idle is not set too high at first...compression/****-good spark at the right time-proper fuel/air ratio and it will run

17.5 briggs intek backfiring thru carb wont start have adjusted valves?

Easy things to check, flywheel key, make sure it is not broken, check the coil gap to the flywheel. could be the coil is not advancing. Check, if it has one, the oil sensor by unplugging it. hope this helps.

1994 gsxr1100 cant get to start sounds like it could be a spark plug just wont kick over.

as well as the above thigs to have a look at, try and have the coils looked at.
on my 92 gsxr1100 the coils had degraded over the years.
the coils will need replaced sooner than later anyway.
this might help.

Bike wont start

I would check for compression on the cylinders. a engine has to have fuel, fire and compression or it wont run. Check the specs to get the operable compression levels.
