I have a non-fuel injected vulcan. Over the winter after running it I would shut off the fuel at the petcock and let the carb run out of gas. The last two time i did this - after the bike runs out of gas and shuts down - I can hear a ticking sound. At first I thought perhaps the cooling fan had siezed up over the winter, but it seems to be fine. I started listening closer and it appears to be comming from just under the fuel tank. It's not like theticking or pinging of a hot exhaust. It's a mechanical sound. It's a rapid ticking really. You can actually feel it vibrating if you put your hand on the frame. When I turn the engine kill switch off the ticking stops. If I flip it back on it will sometimes continue, but not always. The bike starts and runs fine. I can't tell if the ticking is happening while it's running because my pipes would drown it out. Is it possibly the fuel pump? If so where can I pick one up cheap? Thanks anyone who can help!
Hi, Yes it is an electric fuel pump and the ticking is the pump working. So if you hear the ticking your pump should be OK. After turning off the petcock and running the carbs dry the next time you turn it back on you should leave the kill switch on and turn the key on and wait till the ticking stops, turn the key off and back on and wait for the ticking to stop again. You should do this a couple of times to make sure the system fills. Normally you should always use your kill switch to turn off your engine. Also under normal conditions you will not hear the ticking as it only ticks a couple of times to fill the system once it is full. Good Luck to you, This should Fixya!
