I have a 2003 V Star 1100 custom. Great bike but only recently I have a noticable problem. It starts fine, but while idling in traffic it stalls, tuns off. Also, while travling at 10 mph, the motor stalled. I cleaned the air filter with compressed air. Then reinstalled it, worked alright for a couple of months, but I noticed it again. It stalls while idling or moving a slow speed, but not all the time. It doesn't miss, but some times when I roll the throttle it coughs, then works fine. I have not serviced it since 8,000 miles ago. What can you suggest. Carb rebuild, valve adjustment?

Thanks, will look into the carb adjustment. Will also change the plugs. fuel filter, air filter, got 8,000 miles on them. I get a back fire also because I have aftermarket pipes (thunder headers) They sound like a 12 guage if I roll the throttle in nutral in traffic. Anyway, the bike runs well since I got it in 2005 and I had it serviced back then. It's only recently I noticed a problem of stalling, I was in a Veteran's Day Parade and the bike after running it slow and at idle, for a while would stall when I released the clutch. It would start up right away so I couldn't pin point what the problem was. If it was a carb adj or clutch adj or over heating. 5 harley's were down that day due to over heating problem. Out of 30 metric bikes that were in the parade, mine that kept turning off while we were riding in the parade.

2005 V Star 1100 Classic will start but as soon as it is placed into gear from neutral it stalls. Also stalled on the highway. Gas was low and left over; I topped off the tank and rode home on the highway fine. Parked and shut down. Restarted but the same thing happened again - started but stalled out as soon as I kicked it into first gear (did not even release the clutch).

Carbs. need to be adjusted

there are a special set of gauges that a mechanic . hooks up to the carbs. while its running, to monitor the vacuum of each carb.

he adjusts the carbs until all have the same reading. its cool to watch. it will go from running rough to smooth as he gets the carbs to balance out.

V-star 1100 custom stalls when dropped into 1st gear

Check the switch connected to the kickstand. A lot of bikes will not allow you to have the bike in gear when the kickstand is down and if that switch/relay goes bad, it can result in exactly what you are describing.
