Jake, if your ignition is electronic, you may not have enough system voltage to run the starter and the ignition at the same time.
Try with a jump from another vehicle. Likely it will start.
Try bringing the battery to a full and complete charge, water up first,
then retest starting. Some units just have to have a perfect battery and state of charge.
Hi, thanks for the response. yes, it is electronic ignition. I bought a brand new battery for it before i started the project. had it on a trickle charger before attempting to start it. it has plenty of power and spins the engine over with ease. i already tried starting it with the starter wire disconnected and using my starter button to bypass everything. still nothing. but as soon as i pull it , it starts..?? In my thinking, by bypassing all of the bikes electronics and spinning the engine over like you were using the pull start, it should start. right? its producing its own power from its stator. just a little confused.

It sounds to me like the repair shop has connected the ignition wire ( the wire going to the + side of the coil ) to the wrong switch terminal. Take a volt ohm meter and connect the ground wire to the negitive ( - ) side of the battery and expose the ignition switch terminals. With the switch in the OFF position check for volatge on all the terminals. Make note of any terminals showing a 12 volt reading. That is probably the feed line from your battery. Turn the switch to the ON or RUN position and check for a terminal other than the one which gave you a reading before. note and mark this terminal. Locate the coil. There are 2 thin ( 18 guage ) wires attached to the coil. One goes to the distributer and the other goes to the ignition switch. Isolate that wire and reattach it to the connection on the ignition switch you marked earlier...
Good luck,

Drain and replace the gas with fresh.
Remove the air cleaner and spray carb cleaner into the inlet. Work your throttle a little then put everything back together and try to start it.
