Probably just your transmission being old and wear and tear catching up to it. engine braking is a good thing in a manual but since automatics cant judge how far to let out a clutch mechanism that doesnt exist to make it smooth, it usually causes more wear and tear than its worth. maybe time for a transmission rebuild and time to leave engine braking to manual transmissions. $30 brake pads vs $2000 transmission. hope this helps ya

Sir I would first change my filter. When you do you should be able to acertain if anything is wrong by what yuo find in your pan. I think your clutchs are probably bad, but with out being able to scan it I don't have any other ideas. I have been lucky a couple of time before and changing the filter solved my problem. Your car is in limp mode generally you have reverse and second gear. 1st gear and reverse use the same clutches, so I am wondering if maybe you have second gear only!

I would check the transmission and engine mounts but also it may be time for a transmission fluid change. It has a service interval just like oil. 50000 miles
SOURCE: transmission sometimes shifts hard into next gear.
Typiclly this is caused by a failing Pressure Control Solenoid. Now in some cases, since you are in the 1996 model year you may have a vacuum modulator that controls the shift firmness that can be replaced as it is externally mounted. I dont know how best to describe what it looks like, but look down on your transmission, on the front side facing the radiator and if you see a canister like device that has a vacuum line running to it, that is the vacuum modulator and you could start by replacing that and see if it helps.
If you do not have the vacuum modulator and have instead the electronically controlled version of your transmission then you will have a Pressure Control Solenoid and it, unfortunately, is located on the inside of the transmission and cannot be easily replaced without dropping the whole transmission.
The pressure control solenoid is a common issue with your transmission (4T65) and Im leaning more towards you have the electronically controlled version (4T65E).
SOURCE: VERY HARD SHIFTS AFTER ENGINE IS WARM.
Your going to have to get the car scanned for the DTC code. The Check engine light indicates that the ECM has detected an issue with the cars engine or transmission performance. Your hard shifting could be the failure to the Pressure control solenoid (PCS), that would be a DTC code P1811. The PCS is located under the trans axle side cover assembly. IF you go to Auto Zone, they can scan your car free of charge and can give you the step by step instruction to replacing the part that may have failed. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.
SOURCE: goes into neutral and then shifts hard into 1st on slowdown
It sounds like your input clutch seals are rolling. Is the check engine light on. It could also be the pressure control solenoid could be causing the problem aswell

For
car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be
transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

I need to know what degree of probability that changing the ****** filter at 160,000 mi. could result in further ****** problems due to increased pumping pressure or other reason, if the ****** is running good, which, suddenly it is?
