Shaft drive to chain drive conversion.

Looking at putting a 650 turbo motor into an off-road buggy and was wondering if anyone has heard of a conversion to run a chain out of the shaft drive gearbox, or if the rear axle assy is able to be converted into some type of diff arrangement ?

    Thankyou very much for your help. I'll have a look at the XS and see what can be used. The turbo motor i'm using came from the factory and produces approx 92 HP, but I was going to try and lift the PSI a little to get close to 100 HP, so I'll definitely change the cam chain/s while the engines out.
    Thanks for the great advice.

Changing this to chain drive will require some significant expense, you may need to even change the output shaft of the transmission along with multiple case covers. You may be better off running the drive shaft to a differential. I'd suggest looking into some of the newer ATV's that run a differential and perhaps adapt one of them to your application.
The drive shaft sort of limits your ability to adjust the gearing as compared to the chain drive. You may be smarter to find a used Yamaha XS 650 engine and swap all the parts you need out of it to your turbo engine.
On another note, I used to race an OW31 Factory Works Yamaha 750 which was essentially the same basic engine that you are installing the turbo on and I'd like to caution you on cam chains. These baby's eat cam chains if you put more than 100 hp out of them. Dropping a cam chain can be VERY costly, you most likely will destroy pistons, valves, and even bend connecting rods. So if your going to put massive power out of this great little engine make sure you change the cam chain at least before you run it with the turbo. I have seen first hand what carnage happens when you lose the chain.

Changing from shaft drive to chain drive on 650 v star

I was recently asked to make a video on converting a motorcycle from shaft to chain drive, so here we go! In general I do not recommend doing a motorcycle drive shaft to chain conversion, or a motorcycle chain to drive shaft conversion for that matter. In most cases it will cost a lot more money and be more trouble than it is worth, and it is a better idea to simply buy a chain drive motorcycle or shaft drive motorcycle accordingly! Mechanical System Troubleshooting for Stairmaster 4000PT Stepper

  1. Remove the side covers. WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY, DO NOT OPERATE THE MACHINE WHILE THE COVERS ARE REMOVED. DO NOT DEPRESS OR RAISE THE PEDALS WHILE ANYONE'S HANDS ARE INSIDE THE MACHINE.
  2. Remove the Poly-V belt and inspect the belt for cracks, fraying or any other unusual or excessive wear.
  3. Spin the alternator pulley to check the bearings. Replace the alternator if any clicking or grinding noises are heard.
  4. Inspect the alternator pulley for wear.
  5. Tighten the transmission pulley set screw to the flat side of the transmission output shaft.
  6. Remove the drive chain and inspect the chain for frozen links. Replace a chain with frozen links.
  7. Tighten the transmission drive sprocket set screw to the keyway in the transmission input shaft.
  8. Spin the transmission drive sprocket input 1 complete revolution. The transmission pulley output should turn 19 revolutions. Replace the transmission if any clicking or grinding noises are heard during rotation or the drive ratio is not 19 to 1.
  9. Remove the step chains and return springs from the main frame of the machine.
  10. Inspect the step chains for frozen links and the springs for corrosion. Replace a chain with frozen links and replace a corroded spring.
  11. Make sure that the step chain connection points pivot freely and have no vertical play.
  12. Remove the pedals, pedal arms, and leveling arms and lubricate according to the maintenance section of the manual.
  13. Verify that the clutch sprockets of the hub assembly spin freely in the forward direction and lock in the reverse direction.
  14. Inspect the hub assembly for wear. The drive shaft sprocket should not move up and down or side to side.
  15. Clean and lubricate the drive and step chains with 30W motor oil.
  16. Reinstall all parts, ensuring the proper tension of the Poly-V belt and the drive chain.

My '04 v-star 650 feels like it has no transmision. it will click into every gear, but when i give it throttle all i hear is grinding, and there is no movement at all. i don't belive the trans is gone...

I believe you can see the actual shaft for the shaft drive spin. If you start the motor and put it in gear and see the shaft spinning the problem is a stripped pair of gears in the final drive. Compare the cost of the pieces (plus labor) to the entire assembly, the assembly will probably be cheaper. If you can not see the shaft just check the oil in the final drive for metal chips. A worst case scenario , your engine case has metal chips ( That might cost more.).

To increase the top end speed, just put on a smaller rear sprocket. Alternate to that, is to mount a larger front sprocket. You can do either or both depending on how much top end speed is wanted and how strong the engine is to carry the load. The length of the chain will need to be changed.

1981 550 to 650 engine swap

the only thing you could possibly do is change out your swing arm off the 650 and put it on the 550 but you may also have to change out the wiring harness as well to get the 650 running properly

Final drive belt or o-ring chains

and have noticed that the cheaper brands such as Hyosung use final-drive belts instead of o-ring chains. Is this a significant indicator of lower quality or performance? Is there any real difference between the two types of final-drive? I have heard that the belt slightly lowers the horsepower to the rear wheel. To be honest I haven't noticed. I do like the minimal maintenance. Chains are a little noisier require lubrication, cleaning, more frequent tensioning..... Is Harley Davidson a cheaper brand? They use belt drives. They last at least as long, if not longer than chains.,,,
