Push down on the foot lever of the stand while lifting from the handle. Most of the work done is by pushing the lever and the lift handle is mostly for stabilizing and helping to raise the bike. This applies to all bikes and once you get the feel for it you'll find that any size bike is pretty easy to put on the stand. I can center stand my CBR1100XX while on the bike, first time was hard, but once I got it down it's fairly easy.

Usually you do have to remove the entire fairing. The Loosness that you feel in the handlebars is due to the rubber bushing that the handlebars are mounted in. These bushings are designed to absorb vibration. Over time, they get mushy. You must gain access to the upper triple tree which not only involves the removal of the fairing , it could require the removal of the headlight nachelle as well. Good Luck.
