Question about 2006 Yamaha Stratoliner

How do I change air filter on 2006 Yamaha Stratoliner?

I purchased a K&N filter but I do not know where it goes. On a schematic it looks like it goes under the tank. If correct, is removing a tank an easy task, something that should be attempted by an amatuer? If yes, how do you do it?

Thank you for this information. Are you speaking from general motorcycle experience or Stratoliner experience?
If I have to remove the fuel line, how will I stop the gas from flowing out of the tank?

  • You have to remove the fuel tank.
  • Remove front seat. Use your key.
  • Remove rubber caps from the fuel shut off valves. Run screws in all the way to shut fuel off.
  • Remove speedo dash – 3 qty # 5mm Allen. Unplug all connectors including the small white one. Note order of plugs then un-snap from brackets on tank. Disconnect vent line.
  • To remove fuel tank. Remove decorative fins at the front of tank. 2 allens #4 on each side.
  • Remove two 10mm nuts at rear bracket holding tank.
  • Remove 2 qty 12mm bolts at the front bracket holding tank.
  • You can also swing the tank around and set it on the frame, or on a chair, without disconnecting the fuel lines. Remember to protect the frame and tank with a towel.
  • The air box is under the tank. Remove the top cover and replace the filter.
  • You can improve performance by removing some air restiction, Using a 1" hole saw drill 6 holes in air box cover to let it breath better.
NOTE: At least 1 person has reported that the soft fuel lines can start leaking after using this method multiple times. If you smell gas, it may be time to replace the stock fuel lines with a higher grade automotive gas line (7/16").

If you can change the oil in your car you can change the filter the the Yamaha. You do need to remove the tank and to do so you will need to remove the 2 seat bolts on the back of the seat, after that there will most likely be a single bolt holding the tank down in the rear. In some instances the tank may have 2 additional bolts up in the front of the tank which after taking the seat off you will know because the tank will not want to slide out of the rubber slots that secure the front.
In all you should be able to change the filter in about an hour because you will have to remove the fuel line from the tank as well. The "tank" on the top may not really be the tank. It could and most likely be a false tank. There will be a cover to take off to expose the air filter. The gas tank is often located more towards the center of the seat down on the side of the bike on some Yamahas. Either way you can change it. Your better off if the tank is not in front, the job is much easier in that case. In either case the best way to find what you need is by removing the seat first.

Yes it is under the tank , and if you need to change the spark plugs now is the time ,remove seat 1drain gasoline from tank 2. remove the 2 chrome plastic emblems on the sides of the tank towards the front .3.. remove the 3 screws that hold the speedometer / gauges to the tank ,undo all electrical connections at top and breather line 4. remove 2 acorn nuts at bottom of the tank , and 2 other nuts at top of tank on the frame.5.gently lift tank from back side and remove 2 fuel lines from tank , you will probably still have some fuel in the tank and spill some of it . remove tank 6. on top of the frame where the tank goes is a rectangular cover with about 8 screws phillips head , remove the cover and you should be able to see the filter . 7. remove the filter by prying on the edges . reverse instructions to reinstall tank.....
