SOURCE: 89 Harley FLTCU oil coming from the crankcase breather tube and

This is an age old problem for the Harley engine. In you 89 model, the crankcase breaths from behind the oil pump through a tube that runs to the backside of the air filter assembly. Most people that I know, simply remove the tube coming up to the air filter and block the hole in the air filter assembly backing plate. At the breather, they run a short hose to just behind the transmission and cut it off there. This is similar to the earlier Shovelhead engine and the way it breathes. In 1994, Harley went to the "head breather system" which was better but it still gets oil into the air filter assembly.

There is one thing I saw on the aftermarket assessories market once called a "CatchCan". The breather tube ran to it and it seperated the oil from the air and the held it in a small container to be emptied on a regular basis. I have never used one nor have I ever seen one so all I can tell you is what the book said. Matter of fact, I cannot remember where I saw it now. Custom Chorme catalog, maybe. Good Luck, Steve

SOURCE: i have a 1989 harley hugger we changed the oil and...

Too much oil in the system now, Remove a half quart, see what happens. This is common on the Softails and Full Dressers too, when the recommended amount of oil is used. Trial and error through the years have dictated the use of either a 1/2 quart or more, less oil.

Hope this helps.

I have a 1976 Harley fx shovelhead. When I shut my engine off oil will spit out of a hose that is underneath my bike,it does not come out when running just when you shut it down.Does anybody have a clue why...

Basically, it's a crankcase vent line.
While the engine is running, the oil in the crankcase is going all over.
When you stop the motor, the oil suddenly stops and just starts to collect as the crankcase pressure tries to equalize with the outside world.
Kinda simplistic explanation.
I believe your bike vents through the case, rather than through the heads.
One cure is to install a catch can:

http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/m802xJ5E_bJbGXn3jlK26Rg.jpg

Your vent line installs on the 90 degree elbow, the oil collects in the can (which needs to be emptied occasionally), and the filter lookong thing allows the pressure to vent to the atmosphere.

1991 fatboy puking oil from vent tube how to stop oil from puking

The check ball in the oil pump is the problem. It either gets dirt on it, or just doesn't mate up properly with its seat. This allows the engine to "sump", meaning because the crankcase is lower than the oil tank, the oul flows from the tank into the crankcases. I doubt there is a drain plug at the bottom of your engine cases, so the only way to get the oil out of the crankcase is to place a pan under the vent and run the bike. Keep an eye on the oil level in the tank, but don't add a lot if it gets low. Some oil will be circulated back the tank by the oil pump. The simple fix to this problem is to place a clamp on the oil feed line to the pump if you're gonna let the bike sit for awhile. This will not allow the oil to flow from the tank. Replacing the pump again, or reseating the ball may or may not solve your problem. My '91 bagger has the same problem. I just clamp the feed line when I store it for the winter and have no sumping problem when I fire it up in the spring. just remember to remove the clamp before starting the bike!

I have 97 custom fxsts S&S cases I tried to start it and all the oil ran from a rubber hose under the frame appears to be a vent

The engine "sumped". This means the oil drained from the oil tank into the engine crankcase. The hose is the crankcase vent. Start the bike with a pan under it to catch the oil coming from the vent hose. Run the bike to operating temp, then check the oil level. Top it off as needed.

When i start my 91 ultra oil comes out of the vent filter under center of bike. Just started doing this after sitting 2 months,

Regrettfullly, this is a common occurance on any H-D motorcycle in which the oil tank is mounted higher than the oil pump. When the bike is allowed to sit for a while, the oil will seep past the check ball valve in the oil pump and build up in the engine. Harley changed the oil pump in their 1999 and later Twin Cam engines because of this. When the oil settles in the bottom end, we call it "oil sumping". When the engine is started, the scavenge gears simply cannot pump the oil back into the oil tank quickly enough and some of it is blown out the crankcase vent tube. Make sure that when your bike sits for a long period of time, do not add oil to the tank as long as you can see the oil level on the dipstick. If the oil checks a bit low, it may be in the engine cases. If you "top it off", it'll blow it all out the crankcase vent. Once the engine clears itself out, this should stop. If not, you'll have to have the check ball "reseated" in the oil pump.

86 harley oil leaks out carb when you start it

Your crankcase vents into the carb air filter. This was required by the EPA. All crankcase vented pressure has to be cycled through the engine. So, If you'll look behind your air filter to the rear of the bike, you should see a pipe coming from just behind the oil pump up to the backside of the air filter. The air pressure exhausted from the crankcase has an oil mist in it. There are baffles in the pipe but sometimes during servicing, these baffles get left out. Still, even with the baffles, there is some oil mist that makes it's way to the air filter. This oil builds up over time and causes a drip out of the air filter. Regular cleaning of the air filter assembly reduces this.

If you're getting more than the usual amount of oil, your engine could be "oil sumping". This is where the oil in the oil tank seeps past the check ball valve in the oil pump and builds up in the bottom end of the engine. When you start the engine, the oil pump cannot pump it back to the tank fast enough and it's blown out the crankcase vent tube right into your air filter. You can "reseat" the check ball and may be able to get it to stop doing this.

Or, you could remove the crankcase vent tube going up to the air filter. Put a piece of tubing about six inches long on the nipple coming out of the engine case and plug the hole in the backside of the air filter backing plate. Then, the oil will directed onto the ground instead of into your air filter.

I have a 1990 harley fxr and when you start the engine oil starts leaking out of the crankcase breather what would cause this

This is a common problem with the older bikes. The reason is the position of the oil tank and the type of oil pump the engine is equipped with. With the tank being higher than the engine, oil will seep past the check ball in the oil pump and into the engine. When you fire the engine up, the oil pump cannot pump the excess oil back into the tank quickly enough and some gets blown out of the crankcase vent. If you allow the bike to sit for extended periods of time, this problem is worse. It's commonly called "oil sumping" around here. When you hear an old Shovelhead rider talking about his bike "puking", that's what he's talking about. I've seen those bikes puke nearly a quart of oil after sitting a few months. I've seen Ironhead Sportsters completely drain the oil tank into the engine. This is normal to a degree but if it gets too bad, you can "reseat" the check ball by removing the plug above the check ball on the oil pump and use a small hammer and punch to gently tap the ball into the seat in the pump. Then, remove the old ball and drop in a new one.

93 Fatboy oil leaking from vent tube at air filter. oil level is good, not over filled, oil will cover the oil tank on a 100 mile trip

On your '93 model, the crankcase vent is down low on the engine behind the oil pump and it runs up to the air filter through a metal and rubber hose. I don't know how many miles you have on your engine but it you're getting any blow-by on the rings, this will increase the pressure in the crankcase. Most people simply re-route the crankcase breather underneath the bike and plug the hole on the backside of the air filter. Replace the metal line with a rubber hose and put a small filter in the end of the hose. Route the hose back behind the transmission and attach it to the transmission mounting plate just in front of the rear wheel.

This was the way the older Shovelheads were done from the factory for years until the EPA made them start running the crankcase vented air through the engine. In 1994, Harley went to the "head breather" system and moved the crankcase vents to the heads. Still, the oil mist in the vented air builds up in the air cleaner on these models as well.

I have a 1985 harley davidson low rider that i have not run in several months. when i tried to crank it oil poured out of the breather. why does this happen and what do i need to do to fix it

This is typical of a lot of Harleys. This is what we refer to the enigne "puking" oil. The reason it does this is that the engine has been sitting for a long period of time. The oil tank is located higher in the frame than the oil pump on the side of the engine. There is a check ball in the oil pump but sometimes it doesn't stop the oil from seeping past and getting into the cam chest of the engine. When this happens, there is more oil in the cam chest than the oil pump can pump out quickly. So, some of it is blown out the crankcase vent and winds up where ever the vent hose terminates, either in the air filter or on the ground.

To fix the problem, you'll need to "reseat" the check ball and install a new one. I've seen it done before with varying results. The best thing to do is not allow the bike to set for long periods of time. If you're not going to ride it, at least come out and start the engine about once a week to keep the oil pumped into the tank.

Where does the oil go from tank when bike sits a long time?

This is what we call "oil sumping" around here. On the soft tail line or any other line of Harley where the oil tank is higher than the oil pump, the oil will seep past the check ball in the oil pump and leak into the crankcase of the engine. When the engine is started up, it will "puke" the oil out. Now, up until the introduction of the Evo engine, the engine would puke on the ground under the bike out the breather tube. Now with the Evo engine and the EPA's regulation that crankcase ventilation fumes have to be fed back through the intake, it pukes into the breather. An even bigger mess. So, what we do whenever we think we've got this situation is put a pan under the shovelhead and panhead bikes, On the Evos and Twin Cams, we take the air breater cover and the air filter out before the fire the engine. It's a mess either way you look at it. I don't think the Twin Cams are as bad as the Evo engines due to the different type of oil pump.

Leaking oil at air cleaner area

Hmm, take off the air cleaner cover, clean it all out, then fire the bike up, see if you still have a problem, it sounds like the engine vent might be plugged or restricted. After my old shovel sits for awhile, it always pukes out all the oil from the crankcase out the vent tube, but mine runs out on the swingarm, yours might run up to the air cleaner, too
