I have a 1981 yamaha 550 maxim i would like to now what the factory air adjustments are on the carbs

one and a half turns out from fully screwed in.

keep in mind the bikes age,you will rarely find that the factory specs will be spot on after a bike has some years under it.

The Bike was running fine then I removed the air box to install a set of pod air filters and now the bike wont run, are the carbs needing to be adjusted to compensate for not having the original air box?

my goodness kids do your research. carbs mix air and gas very specifically. any change in air intake will mean you also need to adjust the flow of gas in carbs. even if you use an aftermarket filter in the original air box it will still change the amount of air going to the carb, it might not be as drastic as a pod filter but it is still a change. you will probably need to change the main jets in your carburetor as well as play with the air/fuel mixture setting screw.

1982 yamha maxim 650 turns over but wont start battery is charged, turns over fine just wont fire up

you need to do basic diagnoses - 1 compression test, should be better than 130 lb and if in good order around 170 and all cyclinders within 14lb. 2 - check and make sure you have spark at all 4 spark plugs. 3- check and make sure you have fuel in carbies by undoing drain screw in each bowl, if above 3 all ok you probably have stale fuel and will need to remove carbs and clean out jets. this model also suffers from worn butterfly shaft through carbs which creates air leak and the manifolds to the head also leak and **** air.

I hear talk of an air jet for the mukuni bs34 carb. I see a main jet, pilot jet, needle jet, air/fuel adjustment screw but I have no clue on where the air jet is located on this carb. I own a 1981 yamha...

I believe they are referring to the nozzle the needle goes into. A venturi effect is created by the position of the nozzle in the throat of the carb. The nozzle has holes in it and the fuel is sucked through the main jet and out the holes to mix with the rushing air as the needle raises. Beyond that I haven't got a clue.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!
