4x4 doesn't engage

When I push the 4x4 button on the dash there is a clicking sound from the passenger side under the kick panel, it is coming from a gray box with a red light on it. The red light only goes on if I push a white tab on the box. The 4x4 light on the dash does not come on and the battery voltage drops for about 2 seconds and then returns to normal. The voltage drops when the gray box starts clicking after i push the 4 wheel drive button.

That box does engage the transfercase to 4x4,there is a small electric motor on the transfercase thats probably bad,try hitting it lightly with a hammer because just like an electric window motor it has brushes in it as well, but its possible that motor is shorting out causing it to draw alot from the charging system,at least my 1993 Ford Bronco did the same thing and thats what i replaced and now it works fine.

You have to remove interior panel in the trunk usually has a red button or right side kick panel under dash. simply push red button in till it locks in. Call a Dodge service manager or consult owners manual.

4 wheel drive wont engage. i have replaced everything but the sensor on the tranny that tell it that its in nutral. i cant find the sensor. where is it.its a 1994 ford F150 supercab. i replaced the push...

Someone else had a problem with one,but it wouldnt disengage, have you check the shift motor yet? also we found out that there is a module behind the passenger side kick panel that has a reset button on it,try that. The sensor i think you are looking for is on the transfercase,i believe it is round with 3 or 4 wires going to it.But i think all it does is makes the appropiate light come on on the dash--4x4 high or 4x4 low.im not sure about it.

I have Ford Ranger Supercab 2001. The 4wd does not engage.. clicking sounds from under the dash board. Please help :)

When you turn the dial to 4 wheel drive it controls a solonoid unit that then controls the electric motor that shifts the trasfer case to 4X4. The clicking sound that you are hearing is probobly the solonoid unit (4x4 control unit) engaging or trying to engage the trasfer case motor. From what I,ve heard the solonoid unit is located behind the plastic panel that is under the glove box and before the passenger side door. Moisture can build up in that area and ruin the solinoid unit over time. Check any fuses that have any thing to do with the 4x4. If the solonoid unit or fuses is not the problem, I would check the wireing to the electric transfer case motor and the motor itself. Good luck and God bless!

4wd not engaging

These trucks are famous for the transfer case control module failing
and causing problems like you are experiencing. The module is
usually located in the passenger foot well kick panel. You should
be able to find it easy since that is what is making the clicking noise
when you try to go into 4x4. When you find it-unplug the 2 connectors
and looks for green corrosion on the terminals in the plug and also on
the module. They are famous for water intrusion thru the heater system. If you find corrosion, terminals in the connectors will need to
be replaced as well as a new module(they are expensive).

The 4 wheel drive doesn't work in my 89 Ford Bronco

The sound is not coming from the glove compartment, it is coming from the panel behind the drivers seat, that's where the relays and computer are located.
The relays click and apply power to a transfer case motor.
The motor attempts to turn a shaft that engages the front drive shaft.
When the computer thinks the shaft has NOT turned it tries again.
It will try three times then quit, figuring the shaft has not turned.

Get someone to crawl under the vehicle and engage the 4WD (just turn on the ignition- do not start the engine) See if they can hear the motor attempt to turn the shaft, it will make a clicking sound.
If not the connections or the motor may be bad.

I have found the most probable cause is the relays on the control board.
If you are technically adept --
you can remove the small side panel from behind the drivers seat and remove the control board. (remove the power plugs first)
Clean the relay contacts and bend them a little to give them more 'wipe' to keep them clean longer.
Put it back in and turn on the ignition.
Then push the RESET button on the side of the board.
Try the in / out 4WD a couple of times. If it doesn't work turn off the ignition, turn it back on and push the reset button again.
