1986 GV1400 overheats

Flush cooling system maybe you need to Replace the Thermostat or radiator cap.

If you have a viscous fan hub then replace it . Have a compression test done to determine if head gasket or cracked head. Check the thermostat operation by starting cold and hold the top radiator hose and time how long it takes until you feel the hose get hot ( 5-10 minutes at idle ). Flushing a radiator is a futile exercise because if the cores are blocked they will not flush out . A flow test is the best indication and if the radiator is over 5 years old then consider a new one as the cooling fins may be flaking off

Replace the thermostat and bleed the air from the cooling system, then if it still overheats you may have a leaking cylinder head gasket. Any shop can detect the leakage with a gas analyzer by looking for the presence of combustion gases in the cooling system.

remove thermostat, and see if it still overheats, check thermostat by boiling water, and drop thermostat in and see if it opens, if opens get new radiator!

Hi, If you see white smoke coming from tail pipe then you will know it is leaking through engine.
I would suggest after you replace head gasket, that you put new radiator fluid (50/50) mix and a new thermostat in. The fluid will keep it from boiling over. Good luck.

A flush and a thermostat is never a bad idea, but it sound like your radiator cap is worn out, not holding pressure, replace it, should have a 16 lbs rating radiator cap.

its either under your gas tank, or on the right side of the front fairing usually with most bikes! check your fan when it overheats, do you hear it come on? if you don't then this allows the coolant to boil away due to overheating and can damage the engine.

Did you also flush the engine block? When the water jackets inside the block dry out, the scale and muck attached the the jacket walls detaches and is carriend by the water into the top radiator tank. Here it sits on top of the tubes blocking off some of them. The engine will get hot now, but it won't boil. I'd advise you to add cooling system cleaner to the radiator and drive for about 30mins. Then, reverse flush radiator again and reverse flush the engine block too. (the thermostat has to be removed to do this)

To solve the problem you have the things to do in this order;

) When the engine is cold top off the radiator with fluid. (When the pump was replaced the fluid should have been also)
) Make sure the radiator fluid has anti-freeze in it. This is also anti boil also !
) Add fluid to the overflow reservoir.
) Make sure the drive belt was replaced on the water pump.
) With the engine running, you can add fluid to the radiator for the first minute or so. You want to get air pockets out.
) Replace radiator cap.
) Let car warm up. When it's hot you should get the radiator fan coming on.
) When it get hotter the air-conditioning fan may come on.
) If the fan does not come on, the heat sensor is probably bad.
) If all fans come on, and it overheats, you may have a bad thermostat. Trace the upper radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. That's where it located.

Do not operate the engine when it overheats, You will damage the head gaskets and cause radiator fluid to leak into the cylinders.
If you smell radiator fluid in the exhaust fumes, it may already be leaking.

You say it gets hot and overheats, are you losing coolant when it overheats? If it isn't boiling over, you seemed to cover everything that could be wrong, the fan is working, if it is not boiling over, just registering hot on the gauge, I wonder if it's just a temp. sending unit that's bad, indicating a overheating problem when there really isn't one. The water pump is bad when the shaft bearings go bad, and it will leak at that point. So, let me know if the car is actually boiling over (steam visible, exiting the cooling system)
