SOURCE: Replacing pull cord --After clutch drum

This is the clutch. It is threaded onto the crankshaft (r/hand threads)..get a smaller size flat head chisel and a mediium size hammer and give a few good whacks on the raised solid part near the middle of the clutch...not near the springs nor on the outer edges. This should loosen it and it will unscrew right off the crank..If it's stubborn, spray penetrating oil (Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster) on it and let it soak overnight. Hope this helps you.

SOURCE: how do you remove the clutch drum assembly for model #316.791890

rycgl gave a great solution for removing the clutch drum, but after the clutch drum is removed, you have to remove the clutch itself from the shaft. It's threaded on, and there's an arrow on the clutch assembly that tells you which way to turn it to remove it (CCW). Once that is removed, you can take the casing off the motor, remove a cover plate, and get to the incredi-pull assembly. Mine went south, to, and it was because the incredi-pull loops the cord around two plastic rollers that rotate around plastic shafts. Of course plastic doesn't hold up very well, so over time, one of the rollers stopped rotating, and the cord cut a slot in the roller and its supporting shaft, which in turn bound up the cord so it wouldn't retract. Fortunately, I caught it before it cut all the way through the shaft, and I replaced the roller with a short piece of 3/8'copper tubing. It works OK, but I'm not holding out too much hope for it to last a long time. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Homelite trimmer ut 15151 How do I replace pull

Remove the tube that holds the flex-drive shaft from the front of the motor cover.Remove the rear engine cover. Remove the throttle cable from the carburetor. Mark and unplug any wires for the on/off switch that go to the ignition coil (underneath front cover) if possible. Now if you have pulled the driveshaft tube out of the way, the clutch drum is up next. Inside it, screwed into the very end of the engine's crankshaft is a Torx #25 screw. Before you loosen it, you will have to lock up the engine. To do so, remove the spark plug. Pull on the starter until the piston is down, then insert a length of clean, soft rope into the engine. The engine will come up and compress the rope, thus locking it in place to allow clutch drum and clutch removal. Loosen the T-25 screw inside the drum.. You may be able to remove it with a long thin-blade screwdriver also.It probably won't come completely out...it is made this way. Next, remove the clutch. It is screwed onto a small threaded section of the crankshaft Removal is counterclockwise.. It will be pretty tight. To help, apply peneterating oil. Whack the ears of the clutch near the center with a dull flat-blade chisel and hammer unless there are bolts. then use wrench. It will turn counterclockwise for removal and there will probably be a removal direction arrow on it's face. After getting that off, remove the Torx screws holding the cover to the engine. The starter unit should be mounted inside as it mates with the top of the flywheel to start the motor. Remember to preload tension (5-7 turns) on the starter unit. Make sure the handle is installed. Jam the unit with a screwdriver or vise grips so you can insert and tie off the new rope. Then remove jam device and let recoil pull your new rope into place while holding the handle. Reassemble and you are done. Disassembly requires Torx head drivers

How can the starter cord be repaired/replaced on a DR Trimmer/Mower with a 6.5 OHV Briggs-Stratton engine.

Replacement cord kits are available in home improvement stores. If the screen cover is pop riveted on you'll need to get replacement pop rivets and a tool to install them. Otherwise, remove the bolts holding it in place and remove the screen. Unwind the broken cord, paying attention as to the direction of the wind. Replace the cord and attach it to the one-way clutch. Don't forget to put the new cord thru the hole in the screen before attaching it to the clutch. Now wind the clutch so the spring starts to pull the cord into the clutch. Pull on the cord to see if it's operating correctly. Once you're satisfied, go ahead and reinstall the screen on the engine.

Replace pull cord

Replacing a pull cord is not easy. After you remove the shaft, then the drum cover, you are left with the drum and clutch. There is a screw in the center of the drum which has to come off. Then there is a the clutch which if not removed correctly will come apart on you. Only after both parts are remove can you get to the pull cord.

How do you remove the clutch drum assembly for model #316.791890

Your clutch drum is held on with a Torx head screw which is screwed into the end of the crankshaft. To lock the engine up so crank won't turn, remove the spark plug, rotate the engine so the piston is down and put some clean pull rope or otherwise soft material in cylinder. ...make sure it is something that won't hang up in the ports on the sides. Then when you rotate the crank, it will compress the rope or soft material, locking up the engine to facilitate removal of the Torx screw, The screw will come loose but will probably not come all the way out...that's just the way they made it.

How to remove clutch?

You have to pull the spark plug and fill the cylinder with some small rope then using a big pair of locking pliers you can loosen the clutch. There should be markings on the clutch as to the direction to unloosen.

Replace pull cord

The pull cord works by wrapping around a coil that holds the line, and
this works by a spring, and there are 4 bearings in a clutch that help it to engage. Through wear and tear this can get to where it just doesn't work well anymore and needs cleaned. Remove the four screws that attach the motor to the clutch assembly. This will give access to the pull cord. Remove and be careful for the spring likes to shoot out when you remove the 4 tabs that hold the spool in. Replace the cord by running one end through the hole that the old cord is in. You then tie a tight knot in the line, you will see this when you remove the old cord. While there I would clean, lubricate, reinstall, the spring, and you should be back to trimming

there is another t20 screw in the neck of the drum. once removed you will expose the drive clutch. soak it good with WD40 then unscrew it from the shaft. if you have all the housing screws out, you should be able to simply remove the housing to expose the pull cord assembly, screwed to housing.
