Question about 1989 kawasaki ZX 400

1989 Kawasaki ZX 400 overheating

My Kawasaki ZX400 1989, has developed an overheating problem. It runs fairly hot anyway, but the other morning it choked to a stop on the open road at an even 100km/ph @ about 8-10 degrees celsius outside temp, not pushing it, and it has done this trip many times before. I noticed a split coolant hose and replaced that now it doesn't want to stay at a cool enough temp. I've stopped riding at the moment until I find some answers. I'm not any sort of mechanic, but I do have a general understanding of my bike. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated @

Hi, Jason and the usual suspects are:
1. Low coolant level.
2. Restricted radiator air flow.
3. Faulty thermostat.
4. Coolant pump or fans inoperative.
5. Vent hose crimped.
6. Air in the coolant and needs bleeding.
7. Engine idling too long or bike moving too slow.
8. Coolant too old needs to be replaced.
9. Faulty temperature sensor, wiring or connector.
10. Radiator veins clogged or corroded needs repair
11. Ignition timing retarded.

There are two seals on the impeller pump. Replace the seals an the leak is stopped. Put in a new cover gasket as well.

SOURCE: 03 zx6r overheating

1. I have an 02 and just normal riding temp for me is 170-188. 2. Yes that is possible you can get a toggle switch from any auto part store and rewire the fan so you can turn it on when you want. Thats what I did and I turn mine on around 175 just to be safe. 3.Yes you would be able to see it through the oil window.

SOURCE: seriously overheating zx6r ninja

With the 05 I would check the thermostat. With the 03 that is normal, my 02 cuts on and off around the same range. I put a switch in so I could turn my fan on when ever I wanted. I run mine once I get to 175...

my bike did the same thing, and it sounds to me like your riding in a lower gear and your thermostat sensor on the radiator needs to be replaced

SOURCE: Kawasaki Ninja 250 running problem

This could be due to timing screw being incorrectly set
Locate gold timing screw on the carbrettta turn it clockwise only slightly till bike idles without choke on, Then when choke it on it should idle a touch higher.
