1990 Honda XR 600 R Logo
Anonymous Posted on Oct 01, 2011

I have a XR600 1990 model. I was washing it the other day and must have gotten water into the exhaust. It run but was really really rough. It then did something funny. As i was kicking it over it felt like the piston jammed and there was a clicking noise when kicking it over. If you rolled the bike backwards what ever it was unjammed and would allow the bike to be kicked over again but then continues to jam. Ive taken the rhs cover off and the top of the head all the rockers and valves are fine and the piston is free of you turn the clutch wheel. Any ideas on whats jamming?

Does your bike have the decompression lever? If so this could be what is jamming up causing your problems.
Otherwise what often happens is that the kick starter cogs don't mesh correctly, seeing as how you have taken the kick starter apart and put it back again and now no probs I would expect that to be your problem.
It might be worth checking your kick starter for wear, or the return spring to see if it isn't broken.

Water doesn't compress, so worst case scenario, you may have done what I did and bent or otherwise slightly damaged a valve or piston component. My engine was a write-off, hope you have better luck!

96 5.0 chevy truck fuel out of tail pipe

You sure it isn't just water condensation from the exhaust pipes..It could smell like gas a little but it probably would run really really rough if it were very much gasoline. Not likely gas.

Decreased engine, now it shudders & idles rough

The water has gotten past the plug boot seal. Pull the plug tire off the plugs and use some compressed air to blow out and dry the plugs. Some times the water can really get deep so don't pull out the spark plugs.

Water dripping from exhaust pipe and running rough when at idle

Water dripping from the exhaust pipe is normal in cold weather until the exhaust system warms up--the water is condensation from the hot gasses meeting the cold (cooler) metal of the exhaust system.

Running rough? there are many causes, timing being one.

I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI and it suddenly started running rough and started smoking. .

If gasoline is left sitting for a while (2-3 months) it attracts water, which could cause the "smoke" and rough running engine.
Unless it is a 2 stroke engine, no oil should be coming out the exhaust. Hold a clean rag or a bunch of paper towels at the exhaust opening BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF and than check if, whatever the rag or paper towels catch is oily. If it is a 4 stroke engine, and oil is the exhaust fumes, a seal inside the engine is gone and has to be replaced.

I have a tecumseh SK120 motor on my snowblower. There was too much oil put in and now it won't start. I removed the excess oil, and cleaned the spark plug. I let it sit for a couple days and checked the...

I would say it is probably trying to burn off the excess oil that has gotten into the combustion chamber, valves, exhaust, etc. Maybe let it run for a bit at idle and see if it clears itself up.

1fz-fe engine 80series using water unable to find leak small leak also runs rough especially at idle changed spark plugs and leads mechanic unable to find leak

you may have a blown head gasket ... water can get into a cylinder .. that would cause the rough running and the water goes out the exhaust .. thats why you cant find the leak .. often as the engine is running you will see bubbles in the radiator .. thats exhaust gas getting into the water jacket ... you may also see a little steam in the exhaust (white smoke) ..

Light should have stored code. Go to local autoparts chain & get free scan for codes and go from there. Saves all that guess work & money a lot of times. Write down code(s) and let us know.

Runs rough and smells of fuel after washing engine!

Don't "wash" the motor, like you wash the outside. Did you pressure wash it? God people are too freakin anal retentive and go screwing up their engines. Next time use engine cleaner and try not wet any wiring harnesses or anything electrical. You probably killed a sensor connection or something.
