1975 flh with elect. ign. runs but little power.

  • Anonymous Aug 16, 2011

Did you recently install the electronic ignition? What kind is it? Do you have it set up correctly? What makes you think it's the ignition system causing the lack of power? There is not enough information in your post for me to make any kind of guess as to what your problem might be.

1975 Harley Davidson FLH shovelhead blows oil out the crankcase @

Hi, Anonymous oil leaking from your air cleaner or breather is caused by oil carryover from the engine. For whatever reason, the breather system is not separating enough oil mist and air from the piston downstroke. There are cheap and quick easy fixes and there are more expensive ones. First, make sure your breather hoses are not dry-cracked-pinched if they are ok you can start by trying the following:
1. Run your oil level halfway between the add and full mark when hot.
2. Run oil breather lines from the head into a TEE fitting be low carb/induction module then a single line into a mini-filter or PVC valve under the frame.
3. Purchase Arlen Ness Super Sucker.
4. Replace umbrella valves and realign oil pump.
5. Replace piston rings and follow proper driving seating procedures
6. Upgrade the oil pump and cam plate.

I have a 1975 flh that i converted from points to elect ingnigtion about 6 years ago. it has run great. now it has very little power. i have changed plugs, and checked for bare wires. it went from great to...

The first thing that comes to mind is the mechanical advance unit. It depends on which electronic ignition was installed in the bike six years ago. Some electronic unit depend on the stock mechanical advance unit while others eliminate it. I'd look at the unit and get the make and model of it. Look it up and see if it uses or eliminates the mechanical advance unit. If it did not eliminate the mechanical advance mechanism, this may be the problem. The units wear out and the ignition timing becomes very erratic. That's the first place I'd check, the ignition timing. Find out what make and model the ignition unit is and go to that company's website. There, you should be able to download the "installation instructions" from their "technical" page on the site. It will tell you how to set the ignition timing with the unit and everything else you need to know about it.

Good Luck

I have a 75 flh with the passenger peg mounted to the primary inspection cover.is this stock. if not where do they mount

Yes, this is where the passenger foot peg on the left side of the bike goes. There is an arm that clamps onto the round stub on the inspection cover and is afjustable to almost any angle. The right side foot peg support bolts to the end of the transmission and also has an adfustable arm that clamps onto a stub on it. Then the pegs go on the end of the arms. Go to this site and take a look . http://www.bikebandit.com/1975-harley-davidson-flh-1200/o/m770#sch171752 I'm pretty sure they didn't move the peg brackets to the seat tubes of the frame until 1977. If your bike has two holes in a welded-on tab on the rear of the down tubes behind the primary and the transmission, you can use the later model peg brackets. But, if your bike has no holes in the frame or the swingarm for passenger peg brackets, this is the only style you can use and stay original. You could fabricate and weld on tabs to later model peg brackets or use clamp on brackets and pegs.

Good Luck

1975 dodge 440 runs great but after tinkering with it it wont sta

I guess it runs if you jump it at the starter??? if so, power comes from the ign switch to the trans (neutral start switch, then to the Starter relay, then to the starter. so ck all that wiring an dsee if maybe you knocked something loose, or try to start it in neutral.
