Hi When I start my motorcycle, my starter runs continuously and does not crank my engin to start, In the past I was able to pust it forward by puuting it in second gear and it would start,Also I picked up while riding for quite a distance it is able to start normally,Overnight, the same problems starts where the starter motor runs coninuously without cranking the engin, Accorrding to my mechanic, he see not fault with the starter, Should there be a springs to release the flywheel as we could not see any spring. What can the problem be and how could this be solved?

Had this, almost certainly the housing / rollers / centre part of the sprague clutch is shot, maybe and very common, the housing is cracked.
Buy the bits yourself from a Yamaha agent ring around for the cheapest and believe me it varies from 110 to 250 and postage from 5 to 25 (try Jersey!) and then take the bits into a Yamaha agent to fix. The reason, the bolts shear, come loose and god knows what. I used permanent thread lock, temp thread lock, new screws, and did it 3 or 4 times. Apparently the bolts are then pressed with a 20 ton press and are special!!
Those are pounds, the site refuses to accept pound signs, apparently they are not English!

The starter has a bad starter clutch. The mechanism may just be gummed up. Try disassembling the clutch for cleaning. Replace the starter clutch if cleaning doesn't do the trick. Please rate my answer. Thanks. hi When I start my - tombones49_236.gif

Stsrter switch is sticking on my gold wing

Hi Clay:
Some possibles:
- switch contacts fused causing continual current.
- Solenoid contacts fused causing continual current.
MAKING ME WORRIED:
- Starters anre not intended to run continuously until the battery is dead.
- ???????????? Did the engine start but the starter continue turning?
- I'd be disconnecting the battery and charging it, then disconnecting the starter and checking EVERYTHING on that circuit to avoid cooking components.

Swisher 60" pull behind mower with 14.5 briggs engine. good spark and the starter will crank just fine. If I prime the carb with a little gas it will start imediately but wont continue. Any ideas..

Hi Andy, the carby will need to be removed and all jets cleaned out with compressed air. Basically its not getting enough fuel through the carby to keep running. Regards Phil.

How can i fix a starting problem

Hi, Try to disassemble the starter from the engine. If you can bench test the starter.
Get a good 12v battery and connect it directly to the starter. If it runs you will know its good. check the connections to and from the battery and switch. You may find a bad switch or a bad ground. Good luck.

1988model starter does not engage more often than it does engage

What does engage mean to you.
To me it means a loud click sound followed by the engine cranking.
Actually engage is just the click sound.
Cranking is the small electric starting motor forcing the engine to move as if it were actually running. Once it moves just a bit a spark plugs fire and the resulting explosions makes the engine keep going until one of the following happens.
Loss of air/fuel mixture (i.e. run out of gas or air intake blocked)
Loss of spark (i.e. battery low or dead, bad coil, bad plugs)
The two above do not come together at correct time (timing)
Something physically stops the engine from continuing to operate (engine seizes, too much load)

If battery is low starter will not engage or crank.
If electrical connections are bad (usually loose or dirty) current will not flow properly and starter will not engage or crank.
Both can be checked with a multi meter.
Measure battery voltage when attempting to start.
It should be 12-13.2 volts and should not drop below around 10 volts
If it is not dropping but still not engaging/cranking, continue to take voltage readings move from battery toward the starter. When you find a sudden voltage drop, investigate wiring just before that point upstream toward the battery.

Won't crank--some kind of electrical problem

Disconnect the (battery) starter cable and check with a multimeter the continuity of the starter relay thru the relay terminals which connect the battery to the starter (key will have to be turned to start) -- if you get continuity, it's likely not the relay, but I'm with you, it sure sounds like the relay (solenoid).

P.S. Running a starter directly off a charger is a good way to burn up a charger.

After motor work starter runs when power applied

sounds like starter solenoid is staying energized sending continued power to starter. need to make sure you plugged the right wire from the starter button and not another hot wire w/ fulltime hot. also if thats ok need to test for power turning off to solenoid when releasing button. if thats ok try tapping on solenoid. lastly, make sure your positive cable from battery is hooked to starter solenoid, then another hot cable(longer) hooks from solenoid to starter, if you hook long hot cable directly from starter to battery, starter will continueous spin.
