G'day.
OK I think I can steer you in the right direction here!
If you go to
http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=282500&category=motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=2005&fveh=6848This will take you to a web site page for access to the parts fisch for your bike.
I checked all three models of XV 1100 & the starter clutch is the same.
This system is different to the Viragos- but I've seen it before many times(on other brands & models).
If you look at the diagram that should come up with the link(if your diagram dosn't come up,select yamaha parts, your yerar, your model, select starter)
Part numbers 6 & 2 are the integral parts of the one way clutch(starter clutch).
As you can see there worth about $550 US.
Add on top an Alternator cover gasket, a flywheel removing tool & oil.
So if you were to do it yourself you stand to save a couple of hundred dollars maybe.
You would have to drain the oil, remove the L/H engine cover(alternator/stator cover)
Remove the flywheel to get access to the starter clutch to replace the two necessary parts.
I do hope that this sheds light on your problem for you.
Kind regards Andrew Porrelli
