1990 Yamaha XV 535 Virago DX - Page 9 - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
I have a 1993 Yamaha FZR 600. It won't start and backfires.
Try going back to basics. An engine needs fuel, air and spark/compression. If you have good compression, a good spark and it's supplying fuel the issue is possibly one of the following. Air supply to the cylinders or something is set up wrong.
Have you checked the air filter is clean? You will be surprised at how much difference a dirty one can make.
Recheck the setup on the carbs. Too much fuel can cause issues just like not enough fuel can. If the carbs aren't balanced to work together they can cause problems and if a needle or jet is slightly out it can be a factor in the issue as well.
The intake boots will depend on exactly how bad they are cracked and if they are the ones between the carbs and the cylinder head. If they are badly cracked they could be letting extra air in thinning the fuel/air mixture making it run 'lean'.
Yes, the battery could be a factor in this. Some engines, especially the higher revving versions, sometimes need to spin over a certain RPM for them to catch and start. Is the Boost pack your using designed for motorcycles? A booster for a car or a truck can be too powerful for motorcycles as they are designed to turn over bigger, heavier engines.
Check through these and comment below and i'll see if I can help more.

How to check engine oil of Yamaha xj 600 ('91) using dip stick?
It has a window, why would you need a dipstick in a sealed system.
I actually just changed the oil in my bike and found myself wondering this same thing. I ended up over filling cause when I started to run her I saw the oil in the window disapear. So I thought, This cant be right. But shut her off and the oil filled back up in the window after a bit.
So after you change the oil and oil filter, run her down the street and back, put her on the centerstand, wait an hour or so, come back, look at the window and see if you have a little bubble at the very top. Add or subtract as needed. Gotta fill up that oil filter after its been changed so you'll probably have to top it off.

1700. How can I adjust the tick over?
This will all depend on whether your bike is fitted with carburettors or a direct fuel injection system. Is this idle speed change a new problem? Sudden idle changes could be a sign of another issue. When was it last serviced? A dirty air or fuel filter can cause idle issues.
Engines that use a carburettor, (Carb), usually have an idle adjustment screw on the carb itself. I would recommend getting an expert to do this as adjusting carbs can be a tricky job. Direct injection systems are usually not adjustable without using specialist equipment.
