1984 Yamaha XJ 650 Questions & Answers
Hi I am doinng an
If the bike has stood for a long time, with the petrol tap in the on possition and if it has a leaky float valve, there is a possibility that fuel has leaked onto the top of an engine piston and in turn leaked through the rings into the oil.
Another reason could be miss firing over a prolonged time, causing a similar result.
Hope that helps.
Were is oil plug on yamaha maxim 650
It is in between the two middle down pipes on the very front of the bike. It's a round thing with vertical fins and a single bolt in the center of it.
Here is a diagram

Apparently the filter itself is under the metal cap I was detailing earlier.I'm going to order one for mine now that I know what it takes!
By the way, it is not a plug.
1984 Yamaha XJ 650 wont stay running
hi,this might help, the carbs off the 550 will have smaller idle (pilot) jets, this will not allow enough fuel through at idle, the main jets sound like they are reasonably close,i would pull apart the ones off the 650 and check the jet sizes and then compare them with the ones off the 550,you will probably find that the ones out of the 550 are way to small, change the jets over(if they are compatible..should be)and your problem will most likely go away...hope this helps...cheers

Where is the oil filter on a 1984 yamaha xj 650
The filter is inside a housing at the front of the engine, low down in the centre, between the centre two exhaust pipes. it is held on by one large central bolt. I think there is a locating lug at the bottom that you will need to line up when you refit the cover.

I have the same bike. The shocks on the rear have adjustable preload which can lower the bike for you. Or you may even be able to find shorter shocks. Check this site for great info on these bikes. www.xjbikes.com
