Xj 600 will fire but
What you are saying is the engine runs when there is a good supply of petrol by top feeding the carbs but not when fed from the tank.
That suggests the supply from the tank is restricted in some way.
Won`t start with the starter button
This tells me your problem is in the solinoid activation circuit. That is the starter button circuit.
On the solinoid are two large terminal posts that your battery & starter motor are connected to.
There is also a conector with two wires going to it.When you press the start button it compleates this circuit and activates the solinoid thus cranking the engine.
Check by removing this conector & probing with a multimeter check for voltage when you press the start button.
Hope this helps

Gear change
hi,this is quite a common problem on these, before you put it into gear pull the lever in two or three times, this will loosen up the clutch plates a little,if i am right it normally only happens when the bike is cold?,the cause is the oil in the gearbox(wet clutch)is probably a little bit heavy, this is why bikes use a multigrade/friction modified oil, hope this helps...cheers
