remove one pad and press lever slowly and see the piston move out then compress back in with a lever , view the condition of the piston/s if they are rusty ! if hard to press out then the piston/s need pressing out and cleaning and the seals checking for damage , use VERY light wet n dry paper so not to scratch the pistons as they are normally chromed ! wash off in petrol as you go ! if the chrome is pealing then replace them and the seals ! clean inside the housing also CAREFULLY !
How to adjust the jets on motorcycle carburetor on level xj 650 yamaha
There is not much adjustment available on this type carb. Changing the jets is one way to improve performance if necessary. If the bike is not running well get a mechanic to Synchronize the carbs. This is done with four vacuum gages and is a rather delicate but necessary adjustment for proper operation.
1982 Yamaha XJ 550, the
It is corrected properly, right? + to the wiring harness and - to ground ... right? Are you certain about the rectifier? Is the battery charged at this time?
You know a alternator cannot make power unless you first put power into it ... right? Alternators (unlike most generators) are not self exciting. If your battery is weak or "dead", the alternator cannot make electricity to charge the battery. I don't know what the rating of your alternator is. Your battery should be fully charged before you do any more tests. If you have a 1 amp charger, allow at least 10 hours for a full charge. Don't cook your battery with a big, powerful, fast charging automotive battery charger.
Good luck with your repair ... I hope you find this response helpful.

I have an 1982 xj650
Look its really hard to tell without seeing the bike when it happens, and if im wrong just repost the question, but it sounds like a problem with the vacumn fuel tap. When it stops can you place the fuel tap on pri between on and reserve and see if it makes a difference
a hole in one float would not stop a multi cylnder bike, it would just make that carb flood
probably not the pick up coils as there are two and they wont fail together, and then come good again
Thanks for the extended question, much better than "my bike stopped whats wrong?"
How to remove spark plug wire from spark plug?
The spark plug wires on your bike connect the same way as on most cars. Pull the insulated boot directly away from the spark plug. Just make sure you pull on the insulated boot, and not on the wire.
I have a Yamaha XJ650
Your battery is low. You should have 12V or more on a good battery. If you have another battery or a way to run jumper cables try it to confirm.
