Most likely a combination of sparkplug heat range (type of plug) and jetting, needle or air mixture settings in the carburetor. Assuming good condition of air filter and operation of the choke plunger. Are you using the correct octane fuel and fuel/oil ratio? Give the plug a clean and emery the spark contacts, set gap at 0.7mm., ideally take the plug to a Yammy dealer and check for correct range for your bike in the area where you ride.
Best to have a range of spare clean plugs handy for wet or hot days etc.
The jetting maybe dirty or wrong size too. In the meantime move the throttle needle clip down one notch. Refer to the site below for a diagram of the carburetor parts. Cheers.

Looking for a workshop manual

Found one on ebay here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Genuine-Yamaha-XJ650-Service-manual-good-shape-650-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem4aa119eb84QQitemZ320530410372QQptZMotorsQ5fManualsQ5fLiterature

Ask the seller a question first make sure its the right year for yours. The price sounds like a good deal for a shop manual.

Hope this helps.

My yamaha xj 550 wont start

Headlamp should go out when starting,to provide more power for starting. Is the fuel making it to the engine?Trash or water in fuel system can cause it to behave this way.Clean air filter and check (test)those fuses,You should get some fuel out of the fuel system if you open the drain on the carb, catch it in a container so you can inspect it for a problem.if you dont get any thats likely to be why it doesn't start.

Changing oil

Make sure it is motorcycle oil, do not use car oil it will make the clutch slip, there will be a dip stick or a small glass sight gauge on the right near the kick shaft for the exact level, the bike should be checked on a level surface,it may even have cast onto the case 2500ml or similar put in the first 1.5litres then a couple of hundred ml at a time and keep checking the level, Im sorry I dont have a manual for the 650 but that is how I would do it.

Ok, I put new gas in my bike, changed the oil, new

If the bike has been sitting for awhile it may be clogged with old gas that evaporated an turned to varnish.

Check your choke cable and make sure it's properly adjusted.

You may have to clean the carbs. Or your coils are not sending spark to the plugs.

81 yamaha xj 650 spark plugs fire when engine

If you are saying the bike still continues to want to run, (rough running I am sure ), after the key is shut off then the engine is "dieseling". Carbon buildup on the piston / valves/ cylinder head is getting red hot from running. The hot spot(s) serve to ignite the fuel much the same as the spark plugs would. Burn only premium gas, be sure the cylinder is clean and not caked with mud or such, and change to a colder spark plug like NGK BP-8es or BP-9es ( BP-7es is the stock plug ). This may keep the engine cooler and stop the problem. The only other way is to pull the head then de-carbon it and the pistons. While the head is off, re-seat the valves using valve grinding compound. Check out Babbitts for parts. Go to www.babbittsonline.com/parts/viewbybrand/parts.aspx Please rate my answer.

I have a Yamaha PW50 which seems to be in good

First, see what you dont have.
You need good compression
Does it have a good fat blue spark at the plug.
Are you getting fuel to the spark plug.
Any bike that sits for half a year could have bad fuel, and the carburator should be cleaned, as it might be gummed up. Changing the fuel in the tank will also help.

This is stupid!!!! yall need to get lifes!!!:)

Kelsey, thanks for sharing the joy of the season so well. For some of us retired motorcycle mechanics this is fun and with no labor involved. By the way, you look really good to everyone with your poor sentence structure and bad spelling. Perhaps paying attention in school would have been a good idea. Y'all have a merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

P.S. The first word of every sentence should be capitalized.
